C-Pig or overwound PK? or none of the above?
« on: April 05, 2009, 11:31:58 AM »
i'm asking this mainly to MDV but feedback is highly appreciated from anyone!

i want br000talz.  :)

at the moment i own every contemporary BKP, even if i haven't yet installed MMs and RYs (MMs are due to be installed on the upcoming custom and i have to decide what to do with RYs)...
i want something a bit different... i was thinking to reequip my S320 that currently has a set of NBs (i mounted NBs on my SA too and we don't want two guitars with the same pickups, or we wouldn't throw away all our money in guitars... no we wouldn't, preciousss...) with a PK neck and with a C-Pig or overwound PK bridge...

YOU (MDV) have got both, if i'm not wrong... what's the difference between them? overwound PK should be hotter (of course) and darker than the standard one... C-Pig should be brighter than the Alnico one... and so on paper they sound pretty similar!

mind that i love both "standard" versions...

ah, i've got two bridge A-Pigs (one in a mahogany Les Paul and the other one in a basswood RG, so they sound different enough to bring GAS at acceptable levels...), and Painkiller really gave me a huge oomph, so i'd say overwound PK, but i-m curious about C-Pig.

Weeeeeell

No

I have an overwound (23k) miracle man, double screw pole, and a double screw pole normal wind PK (bridge, standard neck). And a C-Pig and an A-Pig.

The PK already has 90% of the power of the C-Pig, dont let its low DCR fool you: there are three huge magnets in there driving it.

Its much less compressed than the c-pig, the double screw pole version has just a shade less low end, its got more and more open highs, strings dont 'chime' as well through a c-pig due to the compression, and as a result the PK is clearer with better sting definition. And of course more mid grind - the c-pig is smoother.

The C-Pig is smoother, sharper and tighter than the A-Pig, with more pronounced lows and highs, but its not scooped (the a-pig has an under-talked-about mid grind that lends it much of its heaviness, while it has a lot of lows its not quite the huge low end monster its made out to be).

You would have to be insane to overwind a PK! Maybe a couple of k-ohms, but I wouldnt take it to any extremity like I did with the MM. A >20k PK would destroy what makes the PK so good - its opennes, clarity and, big fat sound and lack of compression.

uhm...
you're right about PK... touching it could just worsen its great tone. so i should go for a C-Pig... the S320 is middy as hell, so it should be perfect...
C-Pig it shall be!
