Change of Plans???
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:11:40 PM »
I love my Nail Bomb in the bridge of my Floyd - swamp ash Tele....

I am building a maple/maple neck Strat, mahogany body, YSW hardtail bridge.  Neck pickup is a BKP-91, I have already received it.
Will the NB work in the bridge of this guitar?

Thanks
(Here's the neck)

The wood that neck is made from is obviously diseased, look at the disfiguration.
You should send it to me immediately for disposal. 8)

However if you decide to keep it I would also consider a VHII. It has a similar tonal balance to the Nailbomb but lower output, a bit more open and dynamic but with a good mid-range bark.

LOL!!
Thanks
Been a looooong time since I had a mahogany bodied guitar, I didn't know if it would be too dark for the NB. I would do another Tele, but I can't find the bridge I want. I had this bridge way back before Bad Ass was owned by Leo Quan. Early 80's, It was a Bad Ass Tele bridge, solid brass, a mile thick, chrome, humbucker. All machined pieces bolted together, nothing stamped or bent sheet metal.
I had it on a 1969 mahogany Tele....yeah lots of people chided me for routing it! But that guitar really was awesome! Stolen in 1990. I would love to kinda recreate it, but no luck on the bridge, so we'll do it Strat style.

The neck will, as always, be the biggest part of the sound. Hardtail and decent neck join will bring more body into the tone, but theres still going to be more than enough clarity in the maple to work with the NB, regardless of the mahog body (which will likely do its traditional job nicely and bring some decent lows and warmth into the tone)

Its a good combo, IMO, you should have a pretty balanced sound and no trouble with it.

Well, here's a plug for Tommy......  :D
USA Custom Guitars, got this one off the web specials page, $159.00!!
Paua shell inlay dots, 6000 frets. As always, very nice fretwork and a high quality job. I'll have more photos when complete.
I've tried other brands, no comparison really.

That neck is gorgeous... I've always wanted a nice quilted neck.

I think I'd just build the guitar, swap over the NB and see if it works. That's the only real way you're going to know...

If it doesn't work, at least then we'll have a point of reference and we'll know what direction to go in pick up wise.
