Coil tapping p90s?
« on: July 04, 2009, 05:50:41 AM »
Hey There,

Long time lurker, first time poster.  So, here's my question; when talking about coil tapping a single-coil p90, would the procedure be to "tap" a line from the coil about halfway (or wherever) during the winding process, then proceed to continue the wind until the pickup was finished?

I was just thinking about the idea of putting together something similar to the Eastwood Joey Leone sig. model and, after hearing the video, I LOVE the sounds that they're getting out of that thing: 3 p90s, all of which have a 3-way switch; on, coil-tap, off.

Thanks Tim for the great pickups, and to everyone for the great advice.  Undoubtably by favorite music forum.

That's basically how it's done. The tap is placed while the pickup is being wound at some point in during the wind. You have to specify where you want the tap placed when ordering the pickup, because a tap cannot be placed after the pickup is fully wound.

Interesting.  So, you could basically call up Tim and say "Can I get a bkp92 with a tap to take it back to about a bkp90?"

Exactly. Just keep in mind that the tapped p92 will still sound a bit different (hotter, probably) than the p90 because they use different magnets. The 92 uses AV, and the 90 uses AII.

I got my Pig 90 tapped and tbh to me it sounds the same as rolling the volume pot down a bit. Good sound but not worth going out of your way for, imo.
