1x12 Cab for Rat modded Blacheart Little Giant?
« on: May 16, 2009, 05:06:26 PM »
Hi all,

I know lots of people have asked a similar Qs, but here's my question anyway...

I want to know which of the following would represent best value for money. I don't want to here about the virtues or 2x12 etc as space is a premium and i wont be gigging with it, so only interested in 1x12s up to £150ish. I just want to know which do just to the RAT modded Little Giant amp justice.

I will be plugging in an Epiphone Studio Les Paul with high output IronGear pups, and a BC NJ Classic Rich Eagle with stock pups (soon to be BKPs). Epiphone for Metal, and the Eagle for Rock and Blues. So cab needs to be versatile. My list of choices is...

Epiphone Valve Junior 1x12 - about £100
Vox V112TV - about £130
Vox V112NT - about £150
Blackheart BH-112 - about £100
Laney GS112VE - about £130
Marshall MHZ112A Haze - £140
Harley Benton G112 - about £50

The HB is obviously the cheapest, but i could buy that and put a Greenback or V30 in for slightly more or less than the rest. However, due to HB's budget reputation and lack of reliable user reviews and videos I am somewhat unwilling to part with my cash just yet. Then again, upgrading the others is somewhat pointless as the V112NT or for £40 more an Orange could be bought with a decent Celestion already in.

Any suggestions guys?

I find Orange cabs really good quality. It's got a V30 in it already I think.

It's roughly £170 by well worth the price.

I keep the Epi VJ at my singer's house for writing sessions. It's open back, but it has a very sweet, mellow tone, especially considering the bargain basement price. It is also very sturdily built and looks quite dapper. :)

^ yup, the VJ one isn't too bad at all. I got it for around £66 including postage a while back, so bear in mind it's not the best value it's ever been (but unless the exchange rate changes drastically the price is unlikely to improve any time soon). I definitely think it's better for lower gain tones, it can sound a little bit boxy when i run my engl's higher gain channels through it (though now i think about it, maybe I just haven't adjusted my settings from my other cab  ), but is fine with low to mid gain.

Personally, I'm going to upgrade the speaker, but that's to fine-tune the tone I'm after (I want a more sparkly american tone), rather than any shortcomings in the stock speaker, which isn't too bad at all, as Ben said.

I haven't tried any of the others on the list, though.

About £200 delivered now, fitted with a G12K-100 and made in China. The quality of the 'craftsmanship' leaves a lot to be desired. I was really unimpressed by mine. I'm sure the made in Britain stuff is a different story. I re-covered mine and the quality of the ply used underneath was shocking.

I'll once again give props to Martin for the 1x12 he made for me. A little more than your budget (around £200), but a stonking cab, well made and sounds fantastic.

I've heard before about the Orange Cabs that are made in China being a bit dubious, that probably goes for most of the others too. That’s why I leaning towards building my own. For less than £100 I could build a Cab out of decent materials and get a VC30 or Greenback in it. And everyone would be to my taste too. Don’t know though. Does anyone build empty cabs at a reasonable price? All my tools etc are at my parents house in another part of the country so building my own is not the most convenient option.

I am tempted to go for the Harley Benton (which is probably very dubious quality) because all I really need for the immediate future is something to take the load from the amp. The majority of the time I am limited to headphone practice anyway due to living in a flat with a baby.

Still undecided :?

Hey,

Just to update you guys. i came across this on eBay today so bought it, thinks hes got another one for sale too.

Seems like a pretty good deal, considering i can pick it up as its well close to where i live and much cheaper than the above options. Now i hope it all works out...
