Heat question
« on: September 09, 2009, 03:28:24 AM »
I am on my never ending quest once again to see why my TT sounds better when I just turn it on and once it heats up alot it starts sounding really cr@ppy. Is it the valves that I need to change or just keep the room cooler. I am getting really fed up with this little thing I think I will sell it. But do tell me if you know of amps having problems like this and what causes it.

I can't really help - but I can tell you of all the valve amps I've used, that the things only usually start sounding really good when they've warmed up for 20 mins or so.

So I'm surprised that you're finding it the other way round? I'd be guessing there's something wrong, but I wouldn't know what...

Or perhaps you don't actually like the sound the amp's designed to give off when it's cooking? I have read that the TT isn't everyone's cup of tea. I guess it all depends on what "really cr@ppy" actually sounds like (I've heard some apparently fine tones that I think are awful, and vice versa, one man's meat and all that ....)

You'll still need one of the amp experts though...

Mine usually sound better as they get warmer, not worse!

Sounds like it could be a design problem and something can't cope with the heat generated by a few hours use - could be a transformer or something?

What's the problem tone wise?  Loss of presence/high end and an ever growing dull bass often means the power valves are going - obviously this becomes more plain to the ears when the amp's working at optimum.

Yes - every valve amp I've had always seems to sound better when they've warmed up.

I know isnt it really weird. It loses presense volume and bass response. I did the Mercury Magnetics mod on it so it did change the sound. Maybe its just not my cup of tea anymore. Been watching too many JCM clips
