Hey guys.

I'm not really sure where this topic should go, but this seemed as good a place as any :)

I've got the house to myself today and decided to drag out my Orange AD30 head and Marshall 2x12 to have myself a little jam :lol:

I originally had the amp set with gain at about 1 or 2 and had the Volume at about 5. This gave a great clean/breakup sound with both my Crawler/Irish Tour loaded Strat or my Black Dog/Riff Raff loaded Gordon Smith.

I then turned gain up to about 4 or 5 and had volume at 5 and oh my :D

It was instant late 60s/70s Rock sound! I couldn't believe my ears, it was the sound I've been after for ages!

Until now I've usually set my amps clean and used a G2D or Fulltone OD pedals to give them a push into Overdrive. Not anymore!

1 thing I do lose in this approach is that I lose a pristine clean channel, as I have to turn my guitar volume down to clean the amp up. But the overdriven and boosted sounds more than make up for it!

I dunno why I posted this really, but wanted to share how happy I am with the sound of these guitars now :D

Cool,its nice trying new/old equipment and getting a great tone.It keeps the interest and enthusiasm going.

Have you ever found a HOLY GRAIL setting on your amp, and been amazed, and played with that one setting for hours, sounding awesome? However, when you return to that setting for example the next day - it sounds horrible? i hate when that happens! Hehe - I'm glad you found a nice tone - i hope it lasts

Yep! Happens to me all the time! At the minute I'm really loving the tone of my Mule loaded LP into Keeley RAT, into cranked HRDX. It sounds a bit bland low down at the minute because of my shite attentuator, but up loud its amazing :D

1 thing I did notice is that the Crawler in my Strat seems to clear up better than the Black Dog I have in my Gordon Smith LP Clone.

The Black Dog also seems to hit the amp harder than the Crawler. Which surprised me because the Black Dog has a DC Resistance around 8 or 9 while the Crawler is up at about 15.

Ah well, it all sounds good. So I'll leave the 'science' to the guys that make thiese wonderful things :D

I 'discovered' that same technique shortly after I got my hot plate. I just use the one channel now and control the overdrive from the guitar. I was concerned about my clean sound but found that a little bit of break up sounds fine.
