Choosing pickups for '81 Dean Z
« on: June 02, 2009, 12:35:28 AM »
I want to replace pickups on my '81 Dean Z. Styles I play vary from classic rock to heavy metal.
What's the best combination of pickups for me? (I've heard that Warpigs kick ass but I dislike distressed covers.
I'm more into gold covers.)

You can get any cover style on a set of pickups that you like. What's the guitar made of?

Yeah that info is not true, Tim, the main guy at BKP, will do any cover you like, even custom orders if you ask, he's totally amazing like that.

Having said that, War Pig in mahogany will be sludge-tastic. My mule in my flying v will cover classic rock to metal amazingly, and it's mahogany and similar amount of wood. If you're certain you want hotter, the Crawler is the choice for you. Classic growl all the way to thrash if you want it. It's a hot mama that one!

An A5 warpig might not work well with that much mahogany, you'd probably be able to get away with one if your neck were different, like maple, or if your guitar had a maple top to cut through some of that mahogany. A c-pig might work, but warpigs might be too hot for your needs anyway. I'd consider a painkiller, a nailbomb, or a c-bomb.

i'd say nailbombs... painkillers are maybe too "direct" and hot for your needs...
i've got a bridge warpig in a les paul studio, so it's an all mahogany guitar with rosewood fingerboard... it sounds awesome, not dark at all. but it could be a bit too heavy for your style.
no, i'd go with nailbombs after all! ;)

BUT don't reject so fast the idea of fitting camo covers, they look more awesome than you think in every style of guitar!
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

If your rig has enough gain on tap, I would go against the grain here and recommend RiffRaffs. I have them in my all mahogany SG and they really kill for metal. It's important to bring them quite close to the strings but then they have amazing punch and definition.

If you need more output from your pickups then go with the other recommendations and get one of the "hotties".
