neck pickup: clear, deep clean; hot distortion
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:49:17 PM »
Hi !
I'm searching a pickup for my Schecter c1 diamond. In bridge position I have a duncan jb.
I would like a very "full, deep" sound, like les paul, expecially for clean sound ( Opeth ).
Moreover I would explan that I'm not a vintage maniac  :D so I don't dislike a modern pickup.
I haven't too much time for listening all the samples but I this is what I think about some pickups :

I have listened the song with the Miracle man, and I loved that distortion, but in the clean sample it seems a little dirty..
Black dog and cs have too much closed sound, imho.
I like the vh, but, maybe, in distortion it has a too much vintage sound.
Holydiver isn't bad  :D

Please help me I'm confused a lot  :?
I'm sorry for my English..

A Nailbomb neck pup will do what you describe - it's not a closed sound - quite the opposite - very open and breathy - they drive distortion brilliantly, with as much grunt as you care to dial in and clean up beautifully too - and you'll rediscover what your tone knobs are for.
The only downside I can see is that it might make you badly want another BKP to replace your duncan JB bridge  8)

thanks for your reply.
I've just listened to http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=247.msg2272#msg2272 and it's very cool.
What do you play whit this pickup ?

I currently have the calibrated set of alnico nailbombs on an Ibanez RG1550 which is a HSH set up and a DiMarzio Super Distortion S (which has a ceramic magnet) as the middle pickup.  I play a blend of space rock and industrial thrash - so Hawkwind meets Prong kind of thing, and yea the nailbombs do both superbly  :)

the holy diver is more "les paul sounding", imo
the nailbomb is more focused and hard sounding
not as full and warm as the diver

for the neck I'd pick the cold sweat for most stuff
the nailbomb neck is louder, brighter and less balanced
more like a boosted and non-shitey duncan '59

I think you'd love the Nailbombs - I do!
