New pickups (suggestions) for new guitar
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:06:47 PM »
Hey everyone....To start of on a sidenote, I'm computerless right now...  :/
So I'll not have many chances to check your replies, now with that said...
I just got a seven string that's bright as tits!
It's a Seven string  maple neck-thru, mahogany body with a flamed maple top, and an ebony fretboard... Blergh.
'Twas the only seven string I could find that I could afford, but it sounds fantastic, even with EMG's and cheap factory strings.
I was thinking Mule neck for the neck and HD bridge for the bridge.
I asked Tim and he replied saying that...

...I'm going to recommend a VHII neck and Holydiver bridge for Holdsworthesque legato tone.
THEN I asked about a Crawler neck for the neck and he said...

Both Crawler and Mule necks are lower in output and therefore brighter than the VHII neck.....by comparison the CS neck is slightly hotter and fatter with a slightly more contemporary tone.

So is the VHII neck really that much warmer? What IS the warmest neck BKP?
I've had a CS neck in the neck position with another maple neck-thru and it was ridiculously tight and had Vai's pick attack  and then some, BUT... it was incredibly organic.  Again, the tightness ruined it for me though.
I like VERY smooth lead tones and getting crunch for rhythm won't be a probllem since I just switch channels for that.
I would love to get a Christian Muenzner/Guthrie Govan/Holdsworth/Marco Sfogli/Muhammed Suizmez thing going on. just something incredibly smooth and warm as warm can be.
Should I get something overwound? Magnet change? Suggestions please.   :D
Thank you to anyone who bothered to read the redundant piece of cr@p and for any suggestions.

P.S. my styles range from Jazz/Rock/Fusion to Technical Death Metal. Again, THANKS!
P.P.S. My apologies for the cr@p spelling and grammar mistakes. :o

Really?
I heard the HD neck is bright as tits as well. Truth in this?
Or should I go for a Miracle Man neck and HD bridge?

So basically its maple + ebony

The wings, as youre finding out, will make very little difference to the sound.

So, yeah, bright city. You got a tricky one there.

For the neck the warmest BK I've heard (/have) is the Crawler. Its got the clarity (what BK doesnt) but its also really thick and chewy. I probably wouldnt recommend it for what you want normally, but in a really bright guitar all things are not equal and I think it will go really well in it.

For the bridge HD will offset the brightness probably better than anything else in the BK range, but I wouldnt bank on it being tight. It aint gonna do tech death, from what I've heard.

I think bridge wise a ceramic nailbomb would be best. PK will let a lot of "chink" and top attack through the maple, and while its got a tonne of low end its still going to be really, really bright as well, CS is a no-go in all-maple IMO (I have one in the bridge of my darkest guitar, acoustically, and its my brightest guitar amped up), C-Pig would be fine EQ-wise but its overkill in output, A-Bomb would probably be OK for most, but not the tech death, MM would be bright as hell (though D&M likes him MMs in maple, I wouldnt recommend it personally, but its a matter of taste of course), HD hasnt the tightness.

The C-Bomb is versatile, its balanced EQ wise with a slightly tailed off top end compared to most ceramics, I have on in maple/rosewood/basswood/LFR (steel block) Jackson (DX1) which acoustically has some balls but certainly tends toward bright, and its thick, tight as hell, sweet and even for leads, backs off well, rips, sings, crushes and rocks. Do it.

Worst comes to worst you can send it back in for something else if you make your mind up fast enough (very good return policy)

My recommendation is C-Bomb & Crawler. Its an odd combo, but its the best I got for you.
