New Pickups for Gibson SG
« on: August 07, 2009, 08:43:11 AM »
Hi Guys,

I love my Gibson SG Special the looks and playability but the standard pickups leave a lot to be desired very muddy
and very unclear. Im looking for some advice on what pickups to get for it. I mainly play metal/rock and looking for that metallica, ac/dc, black sabbath type of sound. Im not much of a rythmn player (I leave that to my uncle and his fender). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated just so I can wipe the smug grin of my uncles face!!!

Cheers

Welcome :D

Is that one of the "faded" ones? I just acquired one last saturday to put my Riff Raffs in (I wasn't enjoying the Epi SG they were in).

I play blues/blues-rock/pop type-stuff. I am loving what the Riff Raffs do for me in this guitar - but I'm not sure whether they'll cover all your bases?

They DEFINITELY do the AC/DC

I think they'll do the Black Sabbath (certainly the earlier stuff) but I haven't actually tried this particular set-up in that direction. If I really wanted that, I'd be looking at putting Mississippi Queens in there.

Not too sure about metallica, I'm not that familiar with the tones...

So far this week, I've been using this guitar for zz top type stuff, jazz, blues, allman brothers, lynyrd skynyrd, and I've also started experimenting with old school metal stuff I haven't played for years (think Killing Machine era Judas Priest sounds ).

One thing I would ask you, is what sort of accoustic tone has yours got? I decided to replace my Epi because it was kind sterile sounding for me, and the Riff Raffs were great but not as soulful as my other guitars (if that makes sense). It was quite a "hard" sounding instrument. It actually was a lot better, to my ears, for 70s/80s metal than the new SG is. But the new one has "depth" and "warmth" as well as bite and growl - and that's what I wanted.

I tried several SGs and rejected 2 or 3 that sounded a bit thin and harsh for what I wanted. The one I bought had (accoustically) a mellowness and resonance that the others didn't - so I took a punt on it and when I got it home I found I had a winner :D

Depending on your actual guitar I think Riff Raffs might well do the job for you - they are "70's rock" and "early metal" incarnate.

But if your SG is warmer and more "organic" like mine, I wonder whether you might need something "more" (I don't know what though) - this is based on you writing "metal/rock" rather than "rock/metal" in your post above!

yeah, great post Andy !

more than Riff Raff = Rebell Yell maybe ? they are very versatile and sit in the SG VERY well !

Or maybe the Cold sweat as a ceramic alternative to the Alnico V in order to get maybe a little more in touch with the Metallica vibe.

VERY different requirements there.

But my best suggestion for you is the crawler set. If versatility is required, crawlers should be the default: they can take their hand to pretty much anything and be at least OK at it.

Welcome.

I just replaced the RiffRaffs in my SG with Cold Sweats.

Basically, because they are very transparent, musical and dynamic, you can play almost any style with any BKP. They will always do a good job on clean, crunch or lead, at least that's what I find.

Now in terms of being perfect for a certain tone. I would say the RiffRaffs are perfect for AC/DC, the ColdSweats are perfect for Metallica. I could do Metallica with the RRs too, but they are more classic sounding than the CSs, which are then again not as good for AC/DC.

Depending on where your preferences are, you can chose.

I can also imagine RYs or Crawlers as mentioned by some others, but haven't tried those in an SG.

Here some of my clips with the RRs:

Here a clip I did with the CS in the same SG yesterday:

Haha, yeah!

BigHair is what the model in the Axe is called.

It's a design by Cliff (the Axe inventor), so not copying any amp out there, but the basic structure is surely Marshall based. I was actually trying to get the schematics from the BigHair, to get one built in real (would be something new, to build a real amp copying a model rather than the other way round).

When I tried a RY set in a SG, I was SO impressed with the tone and the alchemy between those pups and this guitar (they're made one for each other ) : very tight, growling / biting tone with that "natural" agressivity with huge presence, that gives an overall "straight-talking-and-cutting sound" : you're ready for anything in rock and roll, HARD rock and heavy riffage.

Just roll the vol down and it tempers everything : I found this pup indeed very versatile and Clean are working great too.

Wait for Dheim and other users who have some RY in their SG to come ! As for me I think the RY can cure that "muddy and unclear" issue described by the OP. But the CS is obviously one serious candidate, as the SG / CS combination seems also to be very popular around here....
