Blackstar HT5 vs Spidervalve
« on: August 12, 2009, 03:16:13 PM »
Ok so I'm going to buy a new tube amp and i've run into a little conundrum:

I've tried out the blackstar ht5 combo several times and i think it's fantastic; i was all set to buy it until they sold out and i have to wait till the store gets some more in

However my friend is trying to sell a line6 spidervalve 112, and he said that he would sell it to me for the price of the blackstar (£300), which sounds like a fine deal to me considering it's close to 500 new and is in perfect condition (he spends all his time playing a fender champ).

Now I'm wondering whether to buy his amp off of him instead of getting the little black one.

The blackstar sounds great at low volumes but I'd need to mic it for gigs (Which isn't too much of a problem really) whereas i've played the line6 live and it sounded absolutely great without the need for a microphone. My main concern is that i spend a lot of time playing at home in my small townhouse (with paper thin walls to boot) and i think that the spidervalve may just be a bit too loud at 40w, as my impression is that the sounds are pretty digitised ala spiderIII until you get the volume to at least 9 o clock. Also the spidervalve has a 12 inch speaker as opposed to a ten inch.

SO basicly what i'm looking for here is some opinions on these two amps, bearing in mind that they are the same price for me, but I already own alternative versions of most of the effects that come with the spider so they aren't too important.

I play blues and rock, and some high gain stuff, but nothing that either amp can't handle, so just your impressions of the tones from these two amps would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Blackstar all the way homeslice.

Save up and get a series one.

I love my HT-5.

I agree, I love my HT-5 also, but the Series One amps would seem to have a lot of what you are looking for, a 45W would suit your needs and has some form of power scaling enabling you to use it at around 5W I think it is. The 100W might be nicer for clubs but even with the power scaling turned down may still be too loud for very quiet home use as it runs at 10W I think.

An HT-5 may well suit you and if you don't fancy micing it you can always use the emulated outputs, you get a choice of 2x12 and 4x12 and they sound pretty good to my ears.

Only a test will tell.
