Recommendations please
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:00:09 PM »
Hi All,
I have an Indie Les Paul copy, (just the standard, no flashy spray job).   It's very well made, nothing fancy looks wise, but I'd play an old ironing board if it sounded right.   The pickups are OK, but a little too hot for my liking.

I am completely torn between PGs (You guessed it: Peter Green's my fave player), but otherwise, I'd like a more "usual" classic LP tone.  Plenty of sweet tones, as near as possible to proper PAFs.    Any advice appreciated.

Any words on the PG pickups much appreciated, too!

your name is black dog, so its assumable that you like Zeppelin. Jimmy Page = Sweet les paul tone. Shoot for a black dog?

I think the Mule is BKP's take on a PAF. I guess it would suit you nicely.

Can't really add to what people are saying - sounds like Blackdogs for some reason , but probably Mules.

I would add though, that I got Riff Raffs and Mules in quick succession - I liked the RRs immediately and understood them immediately. The Mules had to grow on me (I love them now though). The RRs are tighter sounding, the Mules more open and kinda hairier in my experience.

I find the RRs generally more controllable and more versatile. But for certain jobs where that particular "plummy and biting" kinda thing is needed, the Mules are the only weapon.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I suppose I was asking for it, calling myself Black Dog!  But yes, I am a Zeppelin fan.   But for tone, I've always loved Peter Green's, although I'm not sure that it'd be as versatile as a "pure" PAF style pickup.

Sounds as if Mules are the way to go.  Thanks for your help.   Any other Indie guitar owners here?

nah, go for the PG's - sounds like its really what you want anyway.  it still does pure paf bridge pretty well and the neck is a nice compliment... much more than just PG tone and no reason for it not to be versatile
