singles for modern punk/hard rock

hey, ive recently ditched my humbucker equipped guitar for my tele for playing hard rock etc.. things like Billy Talent, QOTSA, Hoobastank etc...

and i couldnt be happier... its even sorted the one gripe i had with the EQing on my amp... my amp has a shared EQ and i always felt that when using any humbuckers i could get a very nice dirt tone, but then the clean would be too harsh so i would have to compromise slightly between or mess about with my tone pot when changing channels.. but now.. its just balanced on both channels..

im sure in time i will go and buy another guitar with humbuckers and be blown away, but for now.. single coils all the way.

now this means that i am no longer using my NB which is up for sale along with my SG... in exchange for the stock tele pickups which is a shame, but im sure ill invest in a set of BKs for the tele in time.


anyway, who else uses singles for their hard rock?? and any tips for live use with a bit of gain? ive not used singles live before.. ill have a mess about with them at volume with the band next week..

I use p90s if that counts. I love em so much, they sound awesome. Much better than my humbuckers (Mules), I think. Theres just so much more character, clarity and depth to the sound. Only thing I want to change is to get a matching pig 90 neck as the MQ I have seems a bit low gain in comparison to the bridge pig 90 which is a complete beast!

For the live use, I guess the best thing to do would be to get something like an ISP decimator and stick it in the loop of your amp. Failing that, just get used to turning down your guitars volume control inbetween songs/long pauses I guess?

Been thinking about getting a tele instead of an SG for my next guitar, I cant make up my mind though!

as tom says, p90 or tele would be great for modern punk/hard rock. they've got the flith.

punk is mostly about attitude though, and you can certainly pull it off with a strat if needed - i would take a bridge baseplate though,

ahh a noise gate or something.. ill have to see how it goes next week and see about one.

also yea, i was after the tele deluxe... i still may be, but my head has been turned by the tele deluxe with p90s too..

get something with a baseplate, wound above 8k or so

use a curly lead to connect to your amp

experiment with a treble booster pedal

if you have a strat, make sure the bridge has a tone control, one way or another

also.. ive noticed that my wah which i was very happy with before.. now seems to be very harsh and have a bit of a painful Q sweep.. very sudden abrupt tone change.

maybe its time for a new wah... maybe a vox or something with Q control

I'm losing my interest in full size humbuckers. I barely use my Crawler equipped Yammy SG anymore.

The Powertrons in my Gretsch work great for a hard rock and punk tone.

And if I back down the tone a little on my Esquire with Blackguard it ain't no slouch either.

I was hoping to trade them for MQ's or maybe a very well balanced, transparant, low output PAF.
