VHII vs SD '78
« on: October 12, 2009, 02:42:15 AM »
Anyone out there used both?

Ive had two different Duncan 78's in a Les Paul before.  One was regular specs--about 9k, and one was a bit hotter and came in at 11k.  They both sounded good but didnt sound as full as I expected and harmonics didnt exactly jump out of them---a bit of a dissapointment really.

How does the BK VHII compare?

I've had both - sold the VHIIs and still have the Duncan, which I love.  Mine is slightly overwound at around 9k.

The VHII doesn't sound as full due to the large offset between the coils.  Think of it as a bigger single coil sound if you will.

If you want to go BKP, have a look at something like the Black Dog?

I had a couple of Duncan's P59 & JB, and I gave them away to a friend. Don't have experience with the customs though. I have tried Emerald's & RY's on a 2000 LP std. Both were outstanding on the guitar. Best would be to ask Tim Mills at Bare Knuckle pickups for any specific sound you might want to get or go for, if you can give him a call, great!

The Custom Shop SD stuff is in a different league to the off-the-shelf-stuff.  Like a BKP versus a stock mexican Fender pickup.

It all depends on the guitar though, if that's a bit dead acoustically you're not going to get that harmonic 'zing' from ANY pickup....
