which pickups for an 8 string?
« on: October 23, 2009, 02:36:59 AM »
I'm looking over a schecter 8 string. mahogany body and mahogany neck. rosewood fretboard. fixed bridge and 26.5 scale. I'll probably keep it tuned F# B E A D G B E with maybe an occasional drop to E, but that's about as low as i'll go. (it's the black jack ATX in white :D)

i have a black dog bridge - mule neck setup on my 7 string, but it's maple neck and fretboard with an ash body. both guitars are fixed bridges as well with strings through the body. and set-neck construction.

i imagine mahogany will be fairly darker than the ash-maple combo, so i'm looking for your advice for which pickup sets i could choose. i like the output of my current BKP sets and i want clarity on the low end, not thud, for the bridge, and for the neck, well, i'd approach it just like a normal 7 string as i doubt i'll use the low F# on the neck pickup unless my band lost its bass player XD

this is for metal, kind of like what To-Mera are doing nowadays, which is the sole inspiration for an 8 string. big mean riffs, but nothing like meshuggah. no djents here.

tim suggested riff raffs, which are an interesting choice, as they are a prime choice for chunks of mahogany (les pauls...) so what are the forum's thoughts?
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I think you should listen to Tim!

fwiw I was going to say VHII, but yeah, forum rule number 1 - Tim knows his pickups and you should get what he says. Its your best bet.

yeah, i was thinking VHII's as well! i keep wanting to try them but tim's choices are too interesting to pass up :D

how do the RR neck compare to the Mule neck then? that's my other option, i love the mule neck, it's a bit clear on my maple ash guitar, but i'm sure the cleariness will vanish on the block of mahogany

I can only tell you what I've read and heard in clips on that - same info you have!
