Swamp ash vs. Hard ash
« on: November 19, 2009, 06:35:55 AM »
I'm contemplating my next guitar, and I must admit that I do rather enjoy the sizzle that you get from ash. I'm thinking about outfitting an ash body (maple neck and rosewood board, mind you) with a Nailbomb, but I'm wondering what other hot pickups would do for it. Or P-90s perhaps?  :D

I'm trying to determine the tonal differences between the two, because I know I'm hearing some sizzling mids, but I don't know which one it is.

In my experience, ash is kind of light on mids. Nice highs and lows but not a lot of midrange, especially not northern or "hard" ash.

You've probably seen these before, but just in case:

Hopefully our guitar-builders-in-residence will see the thread and give some more detailed information.  :)

hard ash is marvellous stuff, i love the hard rocking tone it gives! that doesn't tell you much about its character i know, but swamp ash is usually considered a softer tone - having said that my one swamp ash guitar delivers the metal good, and blackmachine seems to be a fan too.
