Nailbomb mid heavy???
« on: November 22, 2009, 06:44:06 PM »
Hey all, BKP user here looking for some advice.

I've had a set of Nailbombs in my guitar (Ibanez SZ) for about 2 years now and I'm thinking of changing.

I have 4 guitars but tend to use my SZ 90% of the time as it's the most comfortable and playable, but today I was having a mess about with all of them and found my SZ to be really lacking tone-wise compared to my other guitars. (PRS Tremonti SE (all mahogany) with Rio Grande BBQ bucker, Yamaha Pacifica 812V (alder, maple and maple)with Duncan JB, and Ibanez RG (basswood and maple) with a Gibson humbucker)

The SZ is mahogany body, maple neck and a thick maple top, and I feel the excessive maple is making the guitar quite focused in the upper mid's, so it has alot of bite but not much beef, and I'm wondering if the Nailbomb could be exasperating the problem? Not saying that it's bad pickup obviously, but maybe just the wrong choice for this particular guitar?

So basically, is what I'm saying making sense? And is there something in BKP's line that's similar in terms of being powerful whilst having a nice clean sound, but with a less prominent midrange and more thickness?

cheers for any advice you guys can give,
Travis

DUnno about more thinkness but it sounds like you want a holy diver.

That said I've never found a nailbomb to be especially upper mid heavy, but I've never played it in your guitar. I have heard something not a million miles from what you describe in a quite a an acoustically shrill guitar and actually a painkiller, couterintuitively, worked a lot better in that, but the best I can recommend you on paper is the HD. YMMV.

Also, given your issues consider double screw pole varients.

the nailbomb is far from a true middy pickup, imo
it's definitely middier than a Gibson 498t or a Duncan Custom V, for example, but no near to a JB or even the Holy Diver
it's more like a really loud, aggressive and double boosted PAF voiced pup
it's more powerful than most usually middy alnico pickups, but if you listen carefully you still can feel that PAF high and low end response
I miss the mid compression of the Diver
