Warmoth Boatneck
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:07:51 AM »

Has anybody played this profile.  My missus is getting me one for my strat for Christmas and I just wondered what they are like.  I wanted the '59 roundback but this neck was only $125 with the sale on so I had to get it otherwise I might have ended up with a shirt for Christmas :?

My Tele neck is an Allparts FAT which I love but for some reason I like them a little less full on a Strat.

The neck is unfinished BTW

Is the Boatneck a profile that was ever found on strats?

One thing I'm excited about is how it sounds, the American Standard neck I sold was very shallow and did nothing for the tone of the guitar so I'm hoping this beefs it up a little....

I believe the boatneck is similar to a Fender Nocaster, and very similar to your Allparts FAT.  It's a big old beast.

If you like them a bit less full on Strats, you're in for a disappointment I think...

I think the Boatneck has a bit of a V to it, so it may be like some late '50s Strats (not that I've ever played any to know!).  The Fatback is more rounded so perhaps that's more like a big Tele U shape.

They're both a full 1" deep for the whole length of the neck, from nut to heel.  I haven't tried either but I'm pretty sure they'd be too big for my taste!

From reading the Warmoth forum, I don't think the Boat is a very "hard" V so even if you're not keen on V necks it may be OK.  I've also read that if you have a 1-5/8" nut rather than anything wider if makes the neck feel a little less huge.

+1

A 1" no-taper neck sounds like a big old beast.  I've played the Std Thin, Wolfgang & 59 Roundback.  Oddly enough, the Wolfgang actually felt the most substantial of the three - much rounder than the 59 which felt almost like a soft V in comparison.

Well I'll get used to it, I'd rather it was too fat than too thin.  I actually really like the nocaster neck but it just seems they should be fatter on a Tele than on a strat.

As it's unfinished I may do some minor reprofiling

That's surprising - I've got an SRV, which is assymetric like the Wolfgang but (according to the specs) a bit bigger, and to me it feels a lot skinnier than the '59.  Although from their website diagrams, it does look like the Wolfgang has quite a rounded shoulder on the bass side, more than the '59.  Maybe I should try one!  :)

I guess maybe they vary a bit, too.  I'll have a couple more '59s soon, it'll be interesting to see if they all feel the same.

It could be like my '58 CS Relic then, by the sound of the other posts, which is full but still comfy.  I know what you mean about Strats having thinnner necks than Teles though, that just seems "right"...

I often wonder whether my 59 roundback neck was mis-labelled & is actually a Clapton, because it doesn't feel particularly "round" on the back :) (it was a showcase purchase).  The Wolfgang was built for me, so assuming they actually made what I asked for (it's correct in every other way), it really is a Wolfgang.

Don't have any calipers to measure them, but perhaps the "59" is thicker at it's thickest point (if that makes sense) with less taper, but the Wolfgang has a lot more bulk on its "shoulders" & seems to fill my hand a bit more.  It doesn't feel or look particularly asymetric either...

They do sometimes mislabel things in the showcase, there are at least a couple of bodies in there now which are completely different from the descriptions!

I imagine the Wolfgang is pretty similar to the Music Man Axis I used to have - that was a really nice neck but it could've done with being the same shape, but about 1mm wider and thicker all round.

The Warmoth SRV feels very asymmetric, it's quite weird.
