7-string bridge pickup
« on: November 27, 2009, 02:01:10 PM »
Hey, new guy here  :guitar4:
So after a while trying to sell my Lundgren M7 I was finally able to get rid of it  :)
The Lundgren was a bit to sterile for my taste and after having a BKP sitting in my 6-string for over 2 years, I knew this was the path to go again. The pickup in my sixer is a Painkiller and I absolutely adore it!
I mostly play melodic death metal like At The Gates, In Flames, Gojira, Dark Tranquillity and so on, but when playing my seven I often find myself playing more extreme tunes.
Should I go with a Painkiller again or should I try a Warpig, maybe ceramic? I'm kinda tempted with the Warpig, but I don't know if it will have that same kind of sterile feeling that my Lundgren had?
Btw. it is going in a Schecter 007 Elite all mahogany guitar

Looking forward to some help
Thanks in advance

If there's one word I would never use to describe the Warpig, it would be "sterile".  I've never used the ceramic one, but I did butcher an In Flames song here with the Alnico one :)

But why not go for a PK?  You know you like it & it handles low tunings well...

i quote Antag. it's very aggressive, less percussive than the PK but with a raw edge thats very brutal... absolutely NOT sterile.

Thanks guys, that actually helps alot. What would you say is the main difference between the alnico and the ceramic WP?

AWP is smoother and a bit middier. CWP has got a sharper attack and is slightly more scooped (without being scooped at all). i hear a lot of tonal differences, but i've got my pigs in completely different guitars (AWP in mahogany LP studio, AWP in basswood RG, CWP in wenge neckthrough, very bright), so i can't really judge. for a 7 stringer, and for sheer BROOTALZ i'd suggest a CWP... :) i'm tuning my RG in B and even the AWP gets a bit muddy on the 6th string. but it's mainly basswood's fault, i think. in my LP the AWP has got much more presence even if it has got a huge bottom.

I decided on the ceramic Warpig. Just for the sheer BROOTALZ of it (did I spell that correctly? )
Actually, a friend of mine has a CWP in his 6-string that he detunes to C, and I really like that. So I hope it'll work as well as a 7-string pickup
