Experiences with Nailbombs in an Alder/Ebony combo?
« on: December 07, 2009, 02:06:50 PM »
Hey folks, new member here.

Big fan of Tim's pickups, my favorite thus far being the painkiller!

I wanted to try something new this time. I was looking for an Alnico bridge pickup that was really articulate and chunky. After checking out clips and reading about the pups, I've decided on the Nail Bomb for the bridge and a Cold Sweat in the neck. (I'm sure about the Cold Sweat  8))

I'll be putting these pickups into a Jackson KE2 and from what I've been reading, the NB is apparently a very bright pickup.

I still went ahead an ordered because if the ceramic Painkiller was great in my Alder/Ebony ESP then I couldn't imagine this being bad at all.

Anyone ever use the Nail Bomb with this wood combination?

Alder Body, Ebony fretboard, 25.5" scale, Floyd Rose, and neck-thru construction.

Thanks!

Yes, though not in a neck-thru guitar.  My Warmoth alder strat has a maple bolt-on neck & maccasar ebony (sp?) fretboard.   I also have NB in a Jackson DK2M (alder/maple/maple bolt-on).

The nailbomb has lot of upper-mid & top-end cut, but it stilll sounds best in a relatively bright guitar.  I'd also used it in Les Pauls & it was good, but it's far better in the alder/maple guitars.

FWIW, I think the NB in either of my alder bolt-ons is less bright than the PK in my KV2.  Yes, it's not a like for like comparison but you get the idea...

& welcome to the forum :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Made me feel a lot better about the order.

I know my Painkiller was an extremely bright pickup but it sounded unbelievable. Wouldn't change a thing about it, if the PK is brighter then I'll have no problems whatsoever.
