I'm new here, advice on which pickups to choose please :)
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:09:51 PM »
Hello!

I'm stu, been playing a good ten years

I play mainly extreme metal preferably doom/black and gore metal, tho I love good music and like allsorts.

After searching the web for a good while I need some help on buying a motherbucker for my guitar :D

typically I came across the latest seymour duncan blackout abh-2 which looks like a good pickup, I have a les paul standard with a livewire sd pickup in which is the older version of the blackouts that uses 2x 9v batteries to run :P

its a good pickup but I recently bought a Krozka Sharpe guitar and thats my main guitar now because of the tremelo system for the dimebag squeals and the fact the neck on the les paul needs repairing

the pickups on it are nice but to be fair not exactly what I need for my style of playing, I can get 7 seconds of pinch harmonic sustain from the livewire on the lespaul and only 3 seconds before the krozka sharpe passive pickups start diminishing

I looked at a number of options and am faced with a choice of either a seymour duncan active or a BKP passive (which look really good)

I've listened to a few samples on these forums and I was impressed with the sound of BKPickups

So I'm probably gonna buy some if there isnt a glaring reason why I need actives instead (didnt think so)

which to buy? that is the question, I liked the soundclip of the nailbombs as opposed to the warpigs but I know there was very very different setups in the eq

basically I want and need the HEAVIEST most CRUSHING sound humanly possible, slipknot is like jingle jangle go play on a banjo to me, think MORTICIAN, EXHUMED and PORTAL

in particular I want a pickup that would be able to handle the same sound as Exhumed's Slaughtercult album, thats a premium sound for me

Which one then, warpig or nailbomb? also does anyone know a comparison of the true output levels of emgs seymourduncan abh-2s and these 2 BKP's? it would be nice to know BKP's are superior output cos I've heard they are like double that of a emg 85 from browsing the net and forums

finally gotta love the idea of having a great pickup that not only delivers crushing distortion but also something I will be able to jam along to Ohm and bands like that , I like playing all kinds of stuff

thats why I'm registered here and not on the seymour duncan forum :)

please if you have any other suggestions do say, I'm not that learned in technical stuff but I know what I need and have been searching for the ideal guitar sound since I started playing

I like nice highs, I'm not really into the bass mid heavy gritty rumble, I want a DJUUUH power chug heavy on the palm mutes and harmonics with a squeal from hell

you lot know what I mean ;)

hmm I also noticed a ton of options when you buy from BKP

I need some help with this please!

spacing? from where to where?

conductor?
leg?

which magnet? I'm thinking this makes a big difference? which is best for the heaviest sound possible? how are they different

big thanks to anyone who answers this!

For you, sir, no question: the Ceramic Warpig.

Spacing 53mm

may as well get 4 conductor: youre obviously going to wire it in series, but it doesnt hurt or cost to have the options.

Short leg is best bet, but I cant be certain on that without knowing the guitar.

was looking at those q-tuner pickups they look crazy good too, any opinions on them? how does the warpig stack up vs a q-tuner super high v metal pickup?

No idea on the q-tuners.

The 81 is the only bridge active I have a/b'd with a c-pig, and its like this:

The C-Pig is on the right.

That pretty much sums it up better than my normal essay on the topic, which I'm getting kinda tired of writing :)

ok thanks its totally out of the warpig or the q-tuner now

the picture above is exactly what i was hoping the comparison between 81 and warpig would be, just that i didnt know how good the warpig was, i DID know that the emgs sucked big time

im leaning towards the warpig but that q-tuner has a bunch of rad stuff on it, i like the 32 screws you can mess about with to change tone etc

what it really boils down to is this: output

i know the dc of the warpig is like 22.7 , and in the q-tuner is 16.5

but i also know if you take out the magnets these values remain the same

so i wonder how much difference the neodymium magnet will make compared to ceramic? and it is gona make a fair difference, all things equal i go with the warpig cos q-tuner demand paypal only

don't get me wrong, i LOVE the look of the transparent ones!
from the samples (those lightning fast shredding samples certainly show a pickup's clarity, but are completely useless... you can hardly hear the tone - and i'll never play like this anyway!) i liked the medium output cleans. should i grow tired of some neck BKP i have i could give it a try... they sound very trebly and cold, though.
