Oiling a neck, what to use?
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:25:37 PM »
I've got a unfinished Warmoth neck on the way and I'm going to be oiling it.

I've coated my Fender neck with Tung Oil before and while it's been ok. I hear Tru Oil is better?

Which should I go for and where could I get either oil? (I got Tung Oil from a small shop, can't remember where though).

How should I apply the oil to both the neck and fretboard?

tru oil.   do 3 or 4 coats just wiped on with a rag... leave it  till the next day and rub back with 0000 wire wool.  it should be really smooth, if its not rub it till it is. but you will probably find you remove a lot of oil to get it there.... if thats a problem apply more coats and repeat the wire wool rub down (off the guitar and away from pickups/electronics).

i also do an oil/wax with danish oil and briwax which feels just as nice but needs more maintenance... it develops into something a little nicer if looked after but tru-oil is nearly just as good and more instant... and a damn site easier

till its dry, an hour or two to be safe... then leave it 24+ hours before rubbing back

I've only tru-oiled a body and that couldn't be easier.  I then rubed briwax over it to give it a bit more sheen which I re do periodically.

There's not much colour to Tru-oil so you don't realy get an amber tint so it might not suit a very white maple neck without some dye.  Having said that it does add a little tint and the Warmoth neck I've just got looks fine so it should work nicely.  If it's too white just add some amber dye to the oil on one of the coats and it will take the cheap Squire Affinity look away.

I'll be oiling my neck whilst watching James Bond on Christmas day so will post a few photos then....
