Best P.U for a fuzz
« on: December 13, 2009, 11:45:27 AM »
i read that the fuzz was made for the single coils...so which is the best pick up for a huge fuzz tone?maybe a p-90(that is a bigger single coil)?

P90s and fuzz work very well if you like big fat tones  :)

Its not that fuzz was actually made for singles, its just that low powered singles (i.e. under about 6k with alnicos) go really well with germanium - on 10 on the guitar volume the germanium imparts the fuzz tone we know and love but go to 8 on the guitar volume and it almost becomes clean.  For some reason that doesn't work so well with high gain singles or buckers.

Apart from that specific point on germanium fuzzes a P90 sounds great with a fuzz.

not for my ears, but people who like fuzz usually like p-90's

I think P-90s cut through it better, humbuckers make fuzz mushy in my opinion.

Any suggestions?
i know he uses vintage voiced single coils (in humbuckers slots) ,but they are so thick...so i thought that the p-90 were a good idea....which pick up is the  a bomb?

IMO that tone has more to due with his pedals that his pickups. IIRC he uses a Big Muff and and adds a POG to get a big sound.

Maybe I should have elaborated, I wasn't going from personal experience, I'm a huge muse junkie, and I was comparing early fuzz to current (albeit used less) fuzz. It was quite mushy when Matt had those Motherbuckers, less so when he used Crunchboxes (but they're still high output ceramics), but at its best (imo) when he uses fuzz through a bridge MQ. I dunno if necks would work well with fuzz, they tend to be warm, and you need something a bit bright and cutting (again, imo).

that's interesting...i don't looking for a very compressed or too metal, fuzz tone..and i don't want exactly the jack white's tone(because the most of it is in his old silvertone amp and national guitar)...maybe tha answer is a splitted humbucker or a p90(as the mq's)

I can get a good jack white tone with MQs, his tone always has that jangle that sounds trashy distorted that you can only get with single coils, so MQs are the way to go.
Just use them with a big muff into a cleanish bright amp.
