Opinions on Cold Sweat/Trilogy Suite combination
« on: January 03, 2010, 10:06:31 PM »
Hi guys,

If all goes well, I'll be buying a maple neck-thru guitar with a floyd and a Cold Sweat bridge and Trilogy Suite neck installed by the previous owner. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information on either pickup. I found a bit on the Cold Sweat, but some of it seems conflicting. Since it'll take a while for it to arrive, I'm hoping to get some opinions as to how they're likely to sound in a Floyded maple neck-thru.

I'm just hoping that the Cold Sweat won't be too harsh or bright, and I really just have no idea what to expect from the Trilogy Suite.

Thanks in advance,
-Liam

Not a bad combination - it ought to balance OK.  I have a Trilogy neck with a Holy Diver bridge & it's a great combination.  The HD is in the same ballpark, power-wise, as the CS.

FWIW, there's a bit of Trilogy neck in these clips here & here
(& the guitar it's in is a maple neck-thru with floyd as well :))

Depending on exactly how this guitar has been constructed, the floyd mounting pillars might be drilled into the maple centreblock & with no rear overlay it would be quite similar to having a maple body.  On my charvel, the mounting pillars pretty much straddle the join line between the centreblock & the alder body wings...

Thanks for that, Antag. Those clips were really helpful. I ended up grabbing that guitar (an ESP Forest GT customshop). I'd managed to be a bit blase about it because I wasn't sure I'd like the pickups, but I'm dying of anticipation now. The CS will probably stay for a while at least (I found some glowing reviews that set my mind at ease that it wont be like a Dimebucker or SH6), and the TS will probably stay indefinitely, but It'll be hard to resist eventually grabbing an A-Pig for the bridge.

Hahaha, awesome. Now I'm glad that I didn't say I was afraid of it sounding like a Custom (although that is something to fear). I'm retarded, though: last night I finally thought to check youtube for Trilogy Suite reviews, and the first result was a video of the very guitar I'm buying.  It's hard to get too much from the video, since I'm not familiar with the amp he uses, how he had it set, etc, but the pickups definitely have a lot of potential. If nothing else, it's going to be nice to have a bridge pickup that doesn't muffle pinch harmonics (the one gripe I have with my Parker). Urgh -- anticipation!

It depends of course ;)

But it sounds like it might come off! I have both pickups and can imagine them working together.

My CS is in a maple through-neck and it sounds very Iron Maiden. TS is a clever choice in the neck for flowing leads, though I myself might be tempted to go for a slow hand.
