NGD (Cold Sweat and Trilogy Suite content)
« on: January 11, 2010, 05:06:02 AM »
I sold one of my Parker Flys recently, and its replacement arrived this morning. It is flawless; not a scratch anywhere. Obviously, it needs a good setup (a good friend of mine is taking care of that this afternoon because I suck with floyds). I did manage to get it in relative tune with the bridge more or less flat, so I've given it a brief tone test. I was half expecting the Cold Sweat to be a too bright and ice-picky, but it's actually pretty smooth-sounding, and not at all harsh. The Trilogy Suite is amazing sounding. I've been starting to really appreciate the virtues of single coils lately, and the Trilogy has only made me love them more. It's fat but articulate, beefy but still clearly a single coil. I'm looking forward to getting better acquainted with them :D

Congrats, that looks bloody good.

I'm just such a massive fan of the Trilogy & become more so every time I explore them.

Why is the Cold Sweat reversed with the screws toward the neck? You should get a warmer tone that way.

I've said it before, that Forest shape is one of the few shred/metal guitar shapes I really like - often tempted to get one even though I'd probably hate most things about it!

Looks great, and I like the black/cream look too.  :D
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

The best I can figure it, the original owner prefered the look of the pickup that way. It's definitely a bridge model though. If it gives a warmer tone flipped around, I'm very glad it's installed that way :)

It wasn't set up badly-- it just wasn't set up at all. It was still detuned for shipping when I took those snaps, 'coz I didn't want to miss my small window of sunlight mucking around. A much more technically adept friend of mine set it up beautifully (much better than I ever could) this evening. It plays like butter, though the regular jumbo frets will take a bit of getting used to.

Hmm, I've spent some time mucking around today, and I'm not sure that I'm going to keep the pickups indefinitely. I like the Trilogy, especially clean and under low gain, but I can see myself getting frustrated with the hum eventually. The Cold Sweat, I'm not so sure about. It's definitely not icepicky or harsh as I feared it might be, but it is bright and "in your face" in a way that I don't really like. I'm not really sure how to describe what I'm hearing -- "too present", maybe? It's definitely a good pickup: it sounds amazing for metal rhythms, and cuts through the mix like crazy somehow without sounding harsh... but I play blues and fusion more than metal, and I like sitting in the mix more than cutting through it.
