NGD for me! (Pic Heavy)
« on: January 09, 2010, 04:24:26 PM »
Well its not strictly a new guitar day I've had it for a week or so (I got it new years eve). but havent had the time to take some pictures.

Its an '09 PRS Tremonti 10 top in tri-colour Sunburst.

I got it from PMT in LEEDS, which were great, They knew I was coming so they set me up in the booth with a Powerball and a mesa 4x12 and the two tremonti's they had in stock, and left me to it to choose between them. They has this and one in a violin amber burst with a one piece top and back but the top didnt do it for me, it had large patches with very little figuring and some with very prominent quilting, just didnt do it for me. also this one was a little heavier felt more like my other tremonti when in a strap.

They gave me a good price for my part ex's on top of the already ridiculous price they had them for (the person that put it on the website put it on for a very competative price for a non 10-top). all in all the whole experience was just how i like to be treated in a guitar shop.

Heres some more pic with my other PRS' an original spec Tremonti and my 20th anniversary custom 22 (with PK in the bridge).

That's gorgeous! I have a gray-black Tremonti which I love, but if one had been available in that finish when I bought mine, I'd have been very tempted.

Is there much of a difference tonally between the new one and the old-spec model?

The new model is a little warmer and rounder the neck cleans are a little more bell like. The original is tighter and more aggressive with a little more bite. This is both acoustically and amplified with the same make and gauge strings (dunlop KK 10-52) in drop c#. The differences are slight but are definately there.

Looking good, and a nice variety of birds too  ;)

Yeah lol just need an SC250 with the old birds and a 25th anniversary model to complete the collection  :P

That's interesting. I thought there might be a bit of a difference, but having never played a MK I, couldn't be sure. From what you say, I reckon the more aggressive MkI probaly wouldn't have suited my (fairly bluesy) playing style quite so well as the MkII does.

Gotta say though, this thread is doing my incurable PRS gas no favours at all. An SC250 with a wide-thin and a Custom 24 are both on the WANT list, to sit alongside my Tremonti and SC245. Not going to happen though, at least no for a good while (the SC250, possibly not at all now it's been discontinued :-( )

The differences are small and can be eq'd out if nescesssary but it is slightly more 'metal' than the new one. It is dissapointing about the sc250 being discontinued, its pretty much a tremonti mk1 with different pickups.

I tried a sc245 whilst i was in the shop whilst it was really nice I prefer the tighter tension the 25 inch scale gives you and the locking tuners and adjustable bridge are a must for me (i play predominatley drop tunings with a heavier gauge low e string so the standard bridge goes out of inotation)

But ive got real gas for one of the new spec custom 24's with the blade switch in fire red.  Although if I ever see a tremonti in fire red it will be a definate waynes world situation (it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.....  :P)

I know what you mean about the string tension on the 245 -  mine's in standard tuning and I'm strongly condsidering going up to 11s on it. It wasn't too much of a concern though - I bought it for the old-school sound to play mostly blues and light stuff on.

I also hear you on those new spec Custom 24s - saw one at Music Live in November and I've never been so tempted to steal in my life!! ;-)

Apparently, if this colour chart is to be believed http://www.prsguitars.com/tremonti/colors.html ,the Tremonti is now available in Fire Red, as well as charcoal burst (just like the man's main stage guitar ), but no longer in gray black! I think it'd have to be a charcoal burst for me, or would that be getting a bit close to stalker-ware?

My dream guitar would be a Tremonti 245 if it did exist.

Yeah I know, charcoal burst is gorgeous, Munky from Korn has a 7 string tremonti style singlecut in charcoal burst and I probably would kill for that guitar  8)

Mark Tremonti has one in the same finish as mine as well (its on the cover of his dvd), he also used it live for a couple of songs the last two alter bridge tours.

Yeah, he had the sunburst one when I saw them play in Cardiff a few years ago, and I really liked the look of it then.

I think if it had been a choice between gray black or the sunburst you have, I'd have gone for the sunburst. But it was a spur of the moment thing - I'd gone to the shop (about 70 miles away) wanting one, but having absolutely no intention whatsoever of buying it. That plan fell apart about 5 seconds after plugging it in! I had to have it, there and then, or I would have thought too much about it, beat myself up over the cost and not bought it.

Don't get me wrong, I love mine, but when I get another one, I'm gald there'll be a few more finishes on offer! ;-)

Yeah I know what you mean, I would have liked a little more colour choice but they're availability is so limited in the uk and I'm not sure I could have standed the wait for one to get ordered in from PRS. I will almost definately be buying another one and that will be in either charcoal burst or fire red.
