What pickups and ordering info
« on: November 19, 2005, 07:51:41 PM »
Hey everybody,
I'm new to these forums but have been interested in BKP for a while now.  What is a good recommendation for a yamaha aes620 (kinda gibson/PRS - humbuckered all nato mahogany string-thru, set neck).  Mostly play through practice amp/headphones lately (really good ones) and have a Laney LC50 amp about 8 hrs away from where I currently live.  I mostly make up my own tunes and have a sort of experimental improvisational metal/rock/stoner/primal/trance thing going to a lot of my playing.  Usually play in standard (or Drop-D) tuning a half step to full step down.  Love stuff like Brutal Truth, Burnt by the Sun, Clutch, Sepultura, Shellac, death&roll-era Entombed, Gorguts, High on Fire, Jesus Lizard, Slayer, Napalm D, Nasum, Quicksand, old Cure, YOB, QOTSA, Fugazi, etc.  Also appreciate jazz/blues.

Thinking about Nailbombs/Miracle Men.
Also what size pickups - BKP offers 50 or 52mm spacing on the humbuckers, how is this measured or are most pickups a standard size?
Also I'm located in Canada and am wondering if its easier/cheaper/faster to order directly from BKP or from one of the new dealers in the US.  Any input is greatly appreciated as I am strongly considering throwing busting out the credit card on this one.

I have really noticed over the last year how any improvement in sound quality or playability/dynamics usually gives my playing a real kick in the ass for the better.

Hi,
I would say the Nailbomb, its very verstile and cleans up really well. its got a full organic midrange, clear highs and a good amount of bass. It was voiced with early Sepultura in mind, but can do most things very well.
The Miracle man has a tighter bass more highs and a smoother mid range. But it will not clean up so well because of the ceramic magnet powering it.

To get the right spacing mesure the distance from your high E to low E at the bridge.

We ship to Canada quite often and our dispatch time is about a week at the moment. (it usually takes about a week to get to canada)

Welcome to the forum!
Thats quite a diverse selection of music you're into there- everything from Slayer to the Cure - therefore i'd have to say to for the more versatile Nailbomb out of that and the Miracle Man which is going for a more ZakkWylde/EMG sound.
I think your Yamaha has a fixed bridge right? Guitars with a tremolo, or in a Fender format tend to have 52mm spacing, and guitars with a fixed bridge, or in a Gibson format tend to have 50mm spacing.
Hope I was some help.
LOVING the Mules!

Thanks for the input guys.

The spacing looks like 52mm from inside edges of low&high e strings at the bridge (tune-o-matic style Yamaha bridge).  Looks like 50mm center to center on the bridge pickup pole pieces though.  Just out of curiosity- do both sizes of pickups fit in a standard sized humbucker cavity?

Also I love the looks of the camo covers and am wondering if sweat will rust/pit them easier because of the finish.

Also, what is the VAT?  and approximately how much would a pair of nailbombs with camo covers and two conductor wiring with shipping to Alberta, Canada set me back.

VAT = Value Added Tax

Its basically an extra price you have to pay as a consumer on the good's price in the UK.

All of BK's prices include VAT.

Seeing as you're not living in the UK, you wont need to pay the VAT though, so you can withdraw that 17.5% from the actual price! :D

It would be around 366 Canadian dollers.

The camo covers will tarnish over time as with all covers. The only covers we do that wont tarnish are the black and chome covers.

Sometimes companies like PRS will fit 50mm pickups into 52mm bridge position (to cut costs I guess) I would advise 52mm for your guitar.

A couple more quick questions and I will probably be making an order.  Do you guys think that I will need new pickup rings? and lastly - what can be done to prevent tarnishing in a pickup.  Would a bit of armour all or guitar polish on the covers help to prevent this.  My sweat is kind of acidic and hard on strings and stuff.

I'm really excited about this.  Checking this board out and hearing about people's geetars being transformed into fire breathing beasts with BKP pickups has me seriously stoked.

Once again, thanks for all the input.

I've decided to get a black covered pair of nailbombs.

Will either size 50 or 52mm fit in the same size cavity and/or humbucker ring? I just don't want to get them in a wrong size and have to send them back.

Also, would it be possible to get black pole-pieces (all black hb)?

Thanks again and I think thats aboot it.

Theres no way of stopping tarinshing that I know of.
The black covers are powder coated with very hard wering stuff, so you should be okay with them.

You can have allen bolts, look in the gallery at battle worn covers. If you want them just type in Allen bolts in the special instructions box.

As far as i know 52mm pickups should fit in the pickup rings.

Hope this helps.

Huh, 17.5% of a two-humbucker set is a pretty penny, too.  I might have to hop over to the States winter, so if so, I should get BKPs sent there for me to pick up and bring back in a dodgy tax dodge! ;)  Though if I had to wait until spring for my next US run, that would be too long to wait before sorting my guitar.

you wont be disappointed with the Nailbombs, they are great pickups for anything from rocK (like Steves clips) to black metal (like my Mayhem one).

Welcome aboard and remember to tell all your canadian friends about BKP 8)
