Pickup Spacing - Oops.
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:39:20 PM »
In a moment of tired impulsivity I bought a Gibson Gary Moore guitar on feeBay last night thinking that I'd drop a couple of pickups into it that I already have.  The pickups are a P90 and a Warpig.  As soon as I'd committed to the thing I remembered that my pickups are Fender spaced.  Doh!  This might be a stupid question, but how much difference does that make to the sound?  Thanks.

Not much IMHO.  It's highly likely that even with narrow string spacing (& bear in mind that the saddle slots on many modern Gibsons are cut quite wide), the top & bottom strings will still be over the inside edge of the pole pieces.  All the strings will be well within the magnetic field.

It will be perfectly useable.

Thanks, Antag!  I guess if I notice any problems then I will still be able to work something out one way or another.

Sure, man.  I have been using these pickups in an SG-alike guitar for a while and been pretty happy with it.  The neck joint has a problem, though, so I'm going to parts it out to other guitars.

Well, I dropped the pickups into the guitar tonight and the spacing is perfect.  In fact, it's better than it was in the "correctly" spaced guitar!  Weird.  Anyways, I've had a bit of a play and the intonation need some serious adjustment, plus I need some new pickup screws, because the neck pickup won't go high enough.  Sounds pretty good so far, though.  I'll post some clips when I have it worked out.

The only thing is that the bridge humbucker is really thin and wimpy sounding.  It was cr@ppy with the burstbucker in it and I thought it was just a cr@ppy pickup, but the warpig is also really thin and weak.  That's not right!  I will start another thread about that, though, and also post a clip when it's working properly.

no, it isn't. weak and thin are not terms i'd ever use with warpigs in the same sentence... are you sure about the wiring?
