Pickup guru's advice needed!
« on: July 04, 2010, 01:51:30 PM »
Hello there,

I have been lurking in these forums for quite a long time, long enough so I allready bought a set of Nailbombs in my LP copy.
And Im perfectly happy with it.

So my real question is: I bought an all mahagony SG and guess what its time to upgrade to some proper Bareknuckle pickups :D
Im a after a rock/stoner/doom kind of tone, definatelly more on the rock side than metal and with a vintage vibe.
The SG is tuned to C standard, so the PUs need to handle that detuning but I need them as versatile as as its possible.

So I would be very pleased if you could enlighten me!
Thanks!

Keven

I'm no guru but i would direct you to riff raffs or VHII. there are plenty of clips in the players section :D
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I have Black Dogs in mine. My SG is maybe slightly brighter than most stock SGs, but I think the Black Dog would work in any SG really and it should work great for what you're looking for. Highly versatile. RiffRaffs would have been my second choice.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Maybe Cold Sweats? They're not really vintagey, but I think that they'll handle the downtune very well.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

I like the Cold sweats too but I think the Emerald is worth looking at - works great in an SG

rock/stoner/doom leaning towards the rock end rather than metal sounds like Abraxas to me - they have a vintage tonality, but handle gain better and have more poke than the straight vintage BKPs.

Here's mine in action playing some Down...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e-vNNMyWMU

and some Sabbath... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t6FSI6vxVE&feature=related

Thanks for all the input guys, it was really helpful!

I like all the pickups you mentioned, exept the CS as I would rather stay alnico.
For the Abrax and Emerald I do like them, but could you tell me which has better lower mids/ low end?
Which can coop with the downtuning?
Or simply which one has a fatter sound?

Ohh, and any opinions about Crawlers in an SG?

Tim always recommends low or very high output models for SGs
I made the mistake of moving a holy diver from a les paul to a SG, and it didn't sound no near as good as in my les pauls
it was an awesome guitar, but the diver sounded muffled and weak in that SG

if you want output, do not fear the alnico warpig
it's a very versatile pickup
if you want vintage, go vintage (something under 10k with 42 awg wire)
I just ordered a custom riff raff with larger magnet and slightly overwound for similar purposes
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

my SG sounds perfect with its Cold Sweats, so that's my suggestion... vintage enough and definitely enough aggressive and powerful to handle every genre including metal.
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)
