Gigar Box Guitars
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:14:18 AM »
Hey guys!

I've recently decided im going to try and build myself a three string cigar box guitar with an old tin of cream crackers :P

Ive been drawing a few plans over the week and i think i'm finally ready to go out and get my parts!

does anyone have any experience in the field or can think of anything i am likely to have forgotten?

I'd love to do this but living in a flat I just don't have the space to do half the projects I want to try out.

http://www.cigarboxguitar.com/build.html seems to be a good place to start

... although if I had the time I'd be building something like this, it sounds fantastic

Here's a thread with the one I built:

Good for a project in a small flat...... all the beer I drunk while making it took up the most space.  Didn't draw plans, just scribbled some sums on a bit of paper while I was doing it.  Not the best way, but certainly went with teh style of the build.

Good luck dude.  People love them.

Funny you should mention this, I was in a Cigar shop in Edinburgh on monday that were selling 4-string Cigar box guitars for £250 a pop, with electrics. Turns out a guy had been taking spare boxes off their hands, then told them what he was using them for, so the shop decided to sell them for him. They were pretty nice looking too!

Found a link about him, but no pics i'm afraid!

Looks like it's cigar box guitar week .

Went to the local guitar shop this evening to say hello and see what's new - there are a couple nice guys there that really love guitars -, and they happened to have a couple CBGs around. Had a quick CBG slide/blues jam session with one of the guys, lot of fun, definitly will build me one (or more...).  Will eventually try to build a pup for it to - the uber-cool point with these instruments is that they are so intrisically cheap that you just can't go wrong whatever you do

As Mr Zappa said : "the cheaper they are, the better they are"
(ok, he was talking about monster movies but well, CGBs are kinda monster movie, aren't they ?)
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Right, my pre-requisite period of plan and make no progress is up, and i have about one half of the components and will be getting the rest tomorrow :P

I've decided that i'm going to go a bit off the beaten track with this and see if i can make a guitar for playing something halfway between seasick steve and black sabbath, which shall be know from now on as 'Cobalt'

This thread rekindled my CBG gas and in my search around the net, I've just joined this place:

http://www.cigarboxnation.com/

How you building it?  I used an electric bridge and neck and I could offer a few bit of advice what not to do.

errr...

I'm going to put a 1x2 plank through an old biscuit tin and put some machineheads on the top, get an angled bracket at the bottom, using a p-bass pickup, i think thats about it!
