I pointed out to the seller how the finish wasn't flat at all and you could see streaks when you put it against the light and the finish was sinking, he looked at me like I was from a different planet and said 'I don't give a shitee about the finish' or words to that affect

I put some fresh 10s on but even with the tail piece hiked up like an old gents trousers there's not enough tension. It's super light too for a slab of Mahogany. I wonder if Gibson sucked all the wood out?

Here's the best you're gonna get, apparently wine red and my camera have a feud going on  :x

I think Explorers are very cool looking guitars.

Too big and rawk for me though, unless I suddenly decide to sport the "middle-aged Pete Willis" look.

Nice guitar.

Could it be that the clearcoat is just very thin so you can see/feel the grain?

If so and you don't like that, shoot it with another couple of coats of nitro.

Don't worry about the electronics. Those are good in Gibsons, it's only those pickups that suck.

The electronics are of good quality (e.g. CTS pots, Switchcraft jack) but check that the pots aren't 300k or such, quite a few Gibsons (especially SGs) have these in and it makes them dull and dark.

BKP have started supplying 550K pots which help guarantee that even if you get one of the slightly lower resistance ones due to manufacturing variation, it'll still be 500k or so.

Personally I'd also suggest new strap buttons as the Gibson ones are tiny and just asking for an accident with that big body!
