Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Album Tone?
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:30:13 PM »
Hi guys, I've been reading posts and listening to all your generous sound clips over the last 3 weeks.  During this time I ordered and received my first BKP, a Cold Sweat bridge open poled 2 conductor.  Awesome pickup, I'm returning it to BPK to have a cover put on as soon as I figure out the process for doing this from the States.

I bought the CS bridge for down-tuning to play Atmospheric/Symphonic Metal, think UnSun if you've ever heard of them, it works great for this as I wanted an organic and melodic pickup that could still do this kind of music.  Of course it covers a few other styles too as you all know.

In the mean time I want to nail the Thin Lizzy guitar tones from the Album Jailbreak.  If any of you are very familiar with the different lead tones used in both Cowboy Song and Boys Are Back, please give me your opinion on which BPK would best get me there, sincerely appreciated.

I've always loved the prettyness yet growling thing going on in those songs.  I'll be plugging straight in and using a JMP 50w master volume, 4x12 with a matched quad of English Greenbacks, I should be good to go for sake of being completely clueless on which BPK.  Oh, keep in mind I don't use any boost pedals.

completely off topic and i'm sorry for that, but when you mentioned unsun you weren't meaning the new band of Vader's Mauser, were you?

in that case i could have some objection on your definition of black metal! :P
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

Yes, that's the band, wish I could find a bass player like they have.

Haha, very perceptive, as you probably could have some objection on my definition of black metal!  :P

reading again your original post i noticed that you NEVER mentioned black metal, but just symphonic/atmospheric metal, so there's nothing to object! sorry, old age is playing bad jokes on me... :)

Emeralds? 8)

emeralds?  Emeralds?!  EMERALDS!!!

Ya know, back in the day while spinning the Album, I quite never got to that song before I couldn't resist picking up the stylus and hearing the magic ones again.

Thank You!

Class!

I saw this one last night, but didn't have time to reply before my missus said it was time to put my toys away and go and get her dinner...

Yep, Emeralds is what probably ought to be the choice

I've not heard them, mind. And I've had very passable Jailbreak-era Thin Lizzy tones coming out of a Tokai Love Rock with Mules and also Riff Raffs installed in various guitars. (And I have to say, Jailbreak and Live and Dangerous are pretty much my own personal idea of what a humbucker guitar should sound like - there's lots of other fine tones, but my own benchmark for a humbucker guitar is probably that sound).

If it wasn't for the existance of the Emeralds, I'd be heading towards Riff Raffs.

Welcome to the forum :D.

By the way, it's nice to hear someone else that doesn't want to use boost pedals! I've got nothing against them, loads of people get class results with them, but for some reason I just want the guitar and the amp doing it...

Well, I'm glad this has moved away from becoming a "definitions of sub-sub-genres of metal" thread!   :P

I would say Emeralds as well, for obvious reasons, but I'm not sure if any of us saying that actually have Emeralds (maybe gingataff?), so you should probably check with Tim!  :D

Hunter got an Emerald bridge recently, I liked the sound of it and what he had to say about it.  If you search for "emerald" and posts by "hunter" you'll find his clips and comments.  I certainly want a set if I ever get a maple-top LP type - not sure it would suit my various all-mahogany guitars.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Sadly I don't have Emeralds but if I were going for a Lizzy tone I don't think I'd even stop to consider another option (except maybe Cold Sweat for the Sykes era).

I do have Emeralds and I can say that you will nail the tone with them!  When I first discovered Bare Knuckle Pickups and spoke with Tim back in 2004, I wanted to get a Paul Kossoff tone and the lead tone from 'Still In Love With You'.  After talking a bit, Tim recommended an Emerald/AIV Mule combo, because the AV/AIV together gives a bit of the Peter Green 'out of phase' tone (nowhere near as much as the PG Blues), which is a nice 3rd tone to have.  Now I have a full set of Emeralds in a custom Les Paul, they do exactly what the name suggests, but they can also do a lot more that you might not expect.  They are a great set for all the classic rock driven sounds (I am using a custom made Ceriatone with a KT66 JTM45 power amp and the 18W TMB EF86 preamp).  I do a lot of playing without pedals, and when I do use them it is mainly my Jem Crybaby and a Klon Centaur.
So many pickups, so little time

Phil, since we're talking Emeralds, what's the neck pickup like?

How does it compare with some of the other popular neck models like Mule, Cold Sweat etc?

Great feedback, well spoken and covered!  :)

AndyR, thanks and it's good to be here.  Yes, I hear ya on other BKP being passable for these tones.

Haha Philly Q, I'm also glad it didn't de-rail.  I found Machinehead's clips and they suited me just fine.

PhilKing, absolutely, I can hear it in spades now.  Plus I'm looking at these/this for creating an original tone too.

A side note, my jaw dropped upon my first experience with a BKP, they rule, so I am glad to be amongst fellows who can hear and feel it too.  Appreciate the welcome and all the informative and musically intellectual talent posted on this thread.

Thanks to you all,

WR
