I think you would be better having 36w with power scaling and enough headroom than 15/18w with probably not enough clean headroom (depending what you're playing)

I might be being silly here but surely if you're not supposed to turn a valve amp on without speakers connected then you won't be able to have a recording out? Or does it disconnect the power amp and send from the pre? Would that end up sounding different to the amp when it's full on?

I think the Palmer carries a dummy 8ohm load to avoid such issues.
Most DI boxes do something similar

+1 on the Palmer gear for direct recording - I've got a Palmer 'junction' which goes between your amp and speaker.  It taps a line level signal off the amp's output and filters it to make more of a natural mic'd tone.

I found that the best results are gained by using the Palmer combined with a mic in front of the amp.  However, for demo purposes/ideas, the Palmer is fine.
