Just got back from a Matt Schofield gig
« on: April 18, 2010, 11:54:35 PM »
Great night. He played at The Brook in Southampton to a very small audience. I reckon about 80-100 people maximum. It's a nice little venue in a ropey looking council estate that backs on to an industrial estate.

This is the 2nd time I have seen him in the last few months and he was absolutely on fire tonight. He played a Matchless King Cobra and Dr Z EZG50 with a couple of SVL guitars - one of which was a blue 60s styled strat with rosewood board (typical :x ). It can be seen here : http://www.svlguitars.com/gallery/sixtyone.  The show tonight was intended to be the kick off for his new tour with his 4 piece band. Due to the volcanic ash 2 of his band couldn't fly in so he reformed his trio for one night only.

From strat to finish it was very, very impressive stuff - some of the slower numbers dragged a little but other than that my jaw was on the floor throughout. Betting Man and What I Want to Hear were the standouts for me.

If you get the chance to see him on this tour I would absolutely recommend it.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Seeing him this Friday in Bristol - I've been following his career from the very start and his continued success is no surprise to me, he's a massive talent.  If you ever get a chance to chat to him, do - he's a lovely bloke and when he reveals the secrets of his success it's very funny.  Play along with lots of records, don't get bogged down in theory and technique, play from the heart and make every note count.  Sound familiar?

:D That's an unfortunate typo! Maybe it's subliminal. The strat is going though - just bought the Baja I tried out on Friday. I'm expecting to pick it up on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Oof, that happened quickly!  Have you got a buyer for the Strat already? (not asking for myself, just curious!)

No buyer for the strat just yet - it's not even been listed/photographed yet! I managed to scr@pe together enough to get the Baja and sell the strat on later. I will be doing it - just need to find the time to organise myself.

The baja I played was very nice indeed, in my opinion at least. I was really keen to buy it rather than risk losing that particular one and waiting to find another that I liked.

As Dave says it is good and bad all rolled into one. Maybe one day I'll be able to get another strat. Those SVLs do look nice  :) A bit pricey though.

The SVLs do look nice, but for the same money you could get a nice Fender CS - and he says he doesn't do relics!

Very true Philly, very true. He should do relics really. I was stood next to him last night for quite a bit of the gig - I would have suggested it if I had known he didn't offer them.
