Skool Me On Les Pauls
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:52:41 AM »
Ive pretty much always had an affinity for devil horned guitars, but recently Ive been starting to dig the look of a black Les Paul with a nice white pickguard. But there's just so many different models. There's "Traditional," "Traditional Plus," "Standard," etc. Through my research Ive found that most of the differences have to do with neck shape and tone woods (chambered / solid body, type of wood). So what would be the best model for someone like me who digs detuned stoner / doom, but also wants to shred and play faster thrashy stuff? Ill prob be putting some pups in it as well so any suggestions besides Warpigs would be appreciated.

A Les Paul Classic could suite you. They have a slim 60's neck and hot ceramic pickups.

Play as many LP's as you can, the traditionals are not chambered, but the new standards are i believe.

as for p/ups - Miracle Man for Fast/Thrashy but have an awesome thickness to single note riffs when you want to sludge it up

As a happy Gibson Les Paul owner I would also suggest from what you have said that you look at the ESP Eclipse series

or a PRS SC250 (scale lengh may suit down tuning better)

as well.

I agree with Dazza, a PRS SC250 (or a Tremonti model) would suit you perfectly.

+1 to playing as many as you can. You shouldn't really have to, but if you cherry pick you will find one that suits you I'm sure.

Correct, they aren't chambered. But I think they are 'weight relieved'. Like the 80s Les Pauls.

Like this.

But wouldn't you have more thickness and sustain the more wood you had in your guitar?

Yes you would but you might break your back in the process, if I've missed another reason then please chip in and tell me I'm wrong

Yes,but it's more expensive. You'll need either a Historic.Long tenon ,solid body or an early Norlin, pancake solid body with trans tenon.I have a71,the best Les Paul I've owned.

For faster and thrashier playing styles the ESP Eclipses have a more defined and precise sound, albeit less "classical" LesPaul of course.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I like most things on those except the yellowed inlays - they look like bad teeth rather than aged MOP, just ruin the whole guitar for me...

It can vary from Classic to Classic, mine are much more aged green than aged yellow. Couldn't comment on the pickups, it has Mules in naturally!
