Since you've gone to such great lengths to state your disdain for precision, and the crawlers dont retain much below about C on 24.75 (comparatively speaking, to a tightness and precision freak like me) and cited a clip that sounds like it was played and mixed by 14 year olds with a hangover (call it even for the 'too many notes' etc thing ;)) they should work very well for you

Precision is the key in other projects of mine, but the two bands I use the goldtop in I really just want everything to sound like it's broken y'know?

Crawlers are one I hadn't considered, Mules the same. Crawlers sound like they might be the answer.

Thanks guys.

Now, aged nickel or cream, hmmmm.

that's an interesting choice !

As for me, - and generally speaking, - I'd have thought that high output alnico pups could not give enough clarity with that tuning in a Les Paul.

Listening to your clip I was wondering if something in the hot vintage section could do the trick, something like the Emmie !

Hunter described it this way :
" Think of it as a meatier/slightly more compressed VHII or a BlackDog with tighter bass and/or more top end."

A: Thats not especially tight imo

B: Its in D, and in my experience the A-Pig starts to mud out (to my taste at least, maybe not nfes, for this project) below about C, in basswood and maple

I have to restate (because I'm quite as certain of my recommendation as my experience allows) - based on the mission statement given, the sound clip and my experience of BKs (which includes extensive experience of the A-pig in several guitars) the crawler is the one for the job. I thought "crawler" within seconds of hearing the track, nothing changed through the track and it agrees with nfes' desire for a vintage voicing thats not overly precise.

I suspected you'd take umbridge with that. The playing is tight, the tone lacks solidity and rapidity in the low end.

imo ;)
