Hey guys

I thinking about getting a custom guitar made soon (Feline I'm looking in your direction!!    ).

Basically I'm looking for a classic LP sound.

I'm into Cream, Bluesbreakers and other stuff that gets heavier like AC/DC but hey Aungus usually uses an unmodified '61 or '64 SG anyway.

Thanks guys.

We  LOOOOVE answering pickup questions!!!!

Sorry, but I know nothing about classic LP tones. My tastes lean in a different direction.

Sounds like it's either a Stormy Monday/Riff Raff/Mule recommendation!

Although a RiffRaff may be what you're after seeing as you're after an Angus vibe.

thanks guys,

basically What I'm not looking for is the sort of shredd, high output style picks or active pickup style of sound.

I'm looking to get a Les Paul copy but with a longer scale Fender style neck. so I guess I'm really looking for traditional style pickups that respond to playing dynamics.

If this helps narrow in on suggestions...?  :?

The Mule is supposed to be super accurate original PAF copy, isnt it?

I only have the VHIIs, which are a little higher output. The Mules are lower output, and the Stormy Mondays lower again. Have you searched through the Player's lounge? There are lots of good samples in there, particularly showing the versatitliy of the Mule...

Oh, and all the BKP's seem to respond incredibly well to playing dynamics, whichever model you get you'll find this!
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

I have Mules, VHII's, Abraxas, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday, Emerald and just ordered a set of Black Dogs.  I love classic rock and blues, so here is my feeling.

Stormy Monday - great neck pickup for the cleaner end of the blues rock stuff (Peter Green, Paul Kossoff)
Mule - Classic PAF, think Crossroads, Mr Big, Black Magic Woman (the original version)
Riff Raff - Brighter and hotter PAF sound - AC/DC sound really
VHII - more bottom end - thicker PAF sound
Abraxas - Hot PAF - think the Santana version of Black Magic Woman
Emerald - Lots of harmonics, I like this in the bridge with the mule in the neck.  Could be bright with the wrong woods (same with the Riff-Raff).

So I don't know if this helps you.  I have Riff-Raff (A5) with Stormy Monday (A4) for blues and original classic rock, Emerald/Mule (A5/A4) for more rock things and Abraxas for sustaining leads.  My VHII's are in a PRS and this is a really versitile set.  I am looking forward to hearing the Black Dogs.  Another set that is interesting is a Mule Bridge and VHII neck (I know that sounds the wrong way around, but Tim said with the A5/A4 magnets it could work really well.

The A5/A4 give almost the out of phase shimmer that Peter Green used to get when you use both pickups.
So many pickups, so little time

My question here really belongs in the guitar etc. part of the forum, anyway .... Did you end up finding one of these, a guitar with an LP-style body and longer, Fenderish scale neck?

I'd be thinking either Stormy monday neck/mule bridge or mule neck/riff raff bridge, depending on which side of blues/rock you lean. Either way they're Bareknuckle, so if you don't like what you get, you can swap them.

Carlaz: If you want a simple solution (i.e. one without much internet scanning), I think warmoth'll do you just that. Worth a try, even if I'm mixing up my sites. http://www.warmoth.com
