Neck or Bridge?
« on: June 03, 2010, 06:13:31 PM »
Hi, dumb question coming so prepare yourself.....

Just picked up a MM from Ebay. Seller states that it is a bridge pickup and I have no reason to disbelieve him, however years of experience has taught me that Santa doesn't exist and that the world can be a very cruel place so I have to question it especially as I understand that the MM neck and bridge are both around 17.5.
Is there any other way of telling?
I do know that some say a MM neck can sound sweet in the bridge position and if the pickup sounds good then what's the fuss. Just tried it and the MM is defined but not nearly as wild as I was expected it to be (running into an Engl Blackmore) so the bridge/neck query popped into my head.
The box doesn't have the newer label with a bridge tick box on it.....any ideas?
It's in a PRS SC245, maple top and doesn't sound too dark to be obvious.

Why would the bridge and neck both be 17.5 ?!

This is usually the bridge rating.

My Nailbombs are rated  15.9 bridge and 10.3 neck.

If the neck is that hot you would get quite an imbalance in level as you switch.

Someone with an MM set can probably post their ratings and you can measure yours to confirm.

the bridge version has a thicker magnet
ceramic mag will look dark grey on the sides
alnico 5 has a metallic appearence on the sides
the bridge version is tight and clean
neck version is fat and compressed
if you get a high pitch piercing note in the first frets on the higher E string, it is the bridge version

The cold sweat neck used to be the same pickup as the Miracle man neck
17.5k with an alnico magnet

Even a bridge MM sounds pretty fat and not too shrill in most guitars  (although the alnico magneted neck version will sound really full and fat , but still articuate

Then I'm guessing maybe the neck uses a thinner wire in the coils?  So more DC resistance per metre of wire, but less overall length of wire?

The bridge is a ceramic magnet and the neck is Alnico V.  The coils are the same I believe.
So many pickups, so little time
