At wits end choosing PU
« on: June 04, 2010, 12:40:15 AM »
Hi I`m going nutz trying to decide which pickup to replace the EMG 81 in this Carvin DC125.Alder or poplar wings? on alder neck/maple board neck through short 24 3/4 scale. will have CTS 500 pots.
I want to be able to do shreddy and brootz but still have some good tone and clean up when rolled back.
The EMG is just lacking in charachter for me.

Nail bomb or Miracle Man are the two I keep going back and forth on.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Normally I favour Miracle Man , but I'm tempted to say Nailbomb as the maple fingerboard and  thru neck construction give a certain brightness
Use one of the new BKP 550k ohm pots as well (*or two if having a tone control - in which case also have an oil and paper capacitor) and wire it with 50s style wiring configuration as that keeps high end better when rolling back the volume

This will be a good match I think

I agree with this - the Nailbomb also has better cleans than the MM in most cases.

I'd say Alnico Warpig. It has a thick and vocal lead tone and definately delivers the brootalz. And even if my ceramic version cleans up quite nicely the alnico version should do it in spades.

Yes, I feel the Miracle Man works best in darker/middier guitars, not in bright guitars!
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I was seriously considering the Alnico Wpig but am now leaning towards a ceramic Nbomb.

For your axe, I'd go normal AlNiCo Nailbomb, rather than ceramic. That will also keep the sweet chimey cleans, rather than the marginally worse cleans from the ceramic magnet (marginally!!). If you're dead set on a ceramic magnet, it's time to rethink. I reckon a cold sweat would go nicely in there in that case.

FWIW my Nailbomb cleans up easier with the volume control than my Miracle Man which is a bit more "On/Off".
