madcap scheme! (opinions please!!)
« on: June 10, 2010, 01:19:10 PM »
ok, ages ago i stripped an old worn 7 string for parts and i've still got the neck kicking around at home (the body had been brutalised and isn't really useable :P )
it was a schecter a7+ so it's got a non standard headstock but i was wondering if it would be easy/a good idea to get hold of a tele body (ash or similar, maybe semi-hollow) and force it to fit (bring on the dremmel!)

i guess i wondered if i was onto a good idea or a really really bad one - i can't mock it up in photoshop 'cause i'm at work so i was after some opinions on whether i've lost the plot or not!

Sounds good to me, but you'd have to make the lower cut out a bit bigger other wise you'd have trouble trying the reach the higher frets.

that'd be doable, the neck pocket would need some adjustments anyway...
i suppose the hardest part would be the measuring :)

Anything can be done, but when all is said and done, it's probably going to be easier to make a new body (unless ytou can find something with a suitable neck pocket and scale length (+ holes for bridges etc).

Break out the BIG router and leave the dremel in the cupboard
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

How much wider than a 6-string neck is it?  You can probably get it to work, but it won't be pretty!  It'll overhang the "platform" of the neck pocket on the treble side, and you'll lose most of the "lip" of the pocket on that side too.

You also might want to get a body which isn't pre-drilled and routed for a Tele bridge and pickups - you'll get in a horrible mess trying to drill seven holes through a body which already has six!

my main concern would be scale length... which is why i would go with TM's suggestion
