Good tuition DVDs
« on: October 22, 2010, 02:43:27 PM »
Can any one recommend some good DVD's to get that give some insight into chord voicings, progressions, rhythms etc?

I've got John Petrucci's DVD and one of Frank Gambales but I'm looking for something more in the vain of Robben Ford, Larry Carlton etc.

Hi Steve,

Three firm recommendations come immediately to mind:

* For chord voicings and usage in a wonderfully practical and relatively minimalistic way - I have not found better ( or more fun to apply ) than  The Joe Pass Chord Book.  Each section of this slim book is divided into Major sounds, Minor sounds etc. A simple but most usable way of looking at the way that all things are relative in chord voicings -  and is a great way to find/ collect / adapt voicings for making your own stuff. My personal 'Bible' on the whole subject.

* For appreciating how to tastefully develop deceptively simple ( and very tuneful ) ideas from basic materials - and then be helped understand where you can take it for yourself:

Larry Carlton 'Hot Licks' Volume 1 ( DVD ) :

Great for introducing more advanced soloing concepts in a simple and enjoyable way .

Larry Carlton -' 335 Blues' ( Interactive 3 CD-Rom package ).

A comprehensive expose of Larry's methods, tools and attitudes.  A fine player and relaxed, skillfull teacher. I live in the U.K. - but they sent this boxed set quickly from the States, - and at a very affordable price.  :)

It's nice to hear someone on the forum asking for Larry ,  Robben - and this form of music .

If you subscribe to Truefire.com they have all their packages to stream online, including 335 blues and another couple of Larry Carlton packages. I think it was about $100 for a year, but if you sign up as a free member I think they give you a 30 day free trial.

Robben Ford's "The art of Blues Rhythm"

It's worth a look at 5 mins of Joe Pass just to see how he thinks about chords:

Thanks for posting those very well chosen clips Matt, I enjoyed watching them through. I had seen / own the Joe Pass one, but it's great to have some 'on the fly' revision - and perhaps even more inspiring was the fact that good ol' Joe makes me smile - and feel that I want to play/ practice all day, as he makes it all feel very exploratory and fun.  That clip of the great man positively illuminated my Saturday morning

It was the Interview / rehersal / Guitar Clinc / performance DVD entitled " An Evening With Joe Pass" that moved me full time onto Jazz guitar - when I was enoying my Larry Carlton studies.  Joe ( like Larry ) just made it all so approachable and down to earth.  Great men , and nice people.   8)
