How can I approach the Tool sound (Adam Jones) ?
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:14:16 PM »
Hello I'm a french new one in BKP !  :D

I play on a PRS Paul allender Model, and I actually have an SH4 an JB picks and I would like to come to BKP
I also want to approach the sound of Adam Jones on Lateralus album.

I put my guitar in a NOS preamp (french hand made) and for the moment in a Marshall JVM 410H Head and a Marshall  JMP MKII 1975 Head with 2 4x12 cabs ,but soon I will change for a NOS Amp Head (near a Mesa Recto)
I also use a Line 6DL4 delay and a Vox wah
I'm tuned in D or C
So, I thought that the Warpigs is a good solution for me

Should I use both on (Bridge + Neck) ? to obtain monster and precise rythm sound like on the first song "the Grudge"

for the solos I want a lot of sustain (I love Steve Vai)

Could you help me ?

Thanks a lot  :P

Im french too (if you can give me your nickname on french forum guitariste.com I can response in french in a more accurate way).

Nailbombs or holy diver will give you more of a tool tone than warpigs. They are too brutal for what you want to play.

I pretty much asked the same question and got the same answers
Anyway, I heard Adam uses a SD JB but i don't believe that. Mabye on the first 2 records because they had that mid spike feeling. But lateralus and 10,000 days sound too good to be a JB. I think he used Tom Anderson Pickups for those 2 records. Im not 100% sure, but i know its not a JB!

Tool tells a lot of lies on their gear too. Read several times its a known fact they never tell the truth on what they are using. Adam claimed the silverburst his the only les paul he can achieve his tone with or that he does not use any effects when his pedalboard takes the third of the stage...

IMO nailbomb or diver, great mid push, more low mids and more open tone on the diver, or more focused and a tad more agressive on the nailbomb. Had both on my gibson les paul custom and achieved best tool riffing with the holy divers on my diezel amp. Nailbomb and 5150 was a good combo too. Just to say those are the best modern alnico pickups around for me, its just a matter of taste and matching it well with your rig and guitar.
