Angled HSS Set/Suggestions?
« on: December 26, 2005, 06:12:12 AM »
Hello fellow Bareknucklers.  :)

I have just recently joined this for a few questions of mine.

I am currently planning a back-up guitar project set up like Billie Joe's old Strat (played it at Lollapalooza '94 if I'm not mistaken). His Strat(s) had an angled HSS setup.

So I was wondering the following things:
-What Bareknuckle set should I consider for Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring, Weezer, and overall mostly a 90s alternative sound?
I was considering:
-->Nailbomb humbucker & 2 Irish Tour single coils DC16.3/6.4/6.4 Alnico V & 2x Alnico V
-->Miracle Man humbucker & 2 Trilogy Suite single coils DC 18.5/13/13K Ceramic & 2x Alnico V

-What would be the price area for these sets mentioned above?

-For those of you who have experience with shaping pickguards, could I simply modify an SSS pickguard or should I get it custom made?

Thanks for any help on this!

Hi and welcome.

For as far as I know, the bands you're talking about use PAF style pickups with a somewhat bright sound. I think a good combo for this would be a Riff Raff with some Irish Tours.

I think you would save headaches by having a pickguard made for what you want. You can try http://www.wdmusic.com/pickguards_225_ct.htm, which is where I got the scratchplate for my strat from. Wide variety, really high quality, and good prices.

i have to disagree with you there TO, i have a HSS strat that i put the humbucker in myself. i put the mounting ring on then cut away the plastic with a craft knife. it worked fine, not worth payin 25 quid for another scratchplate IMO.

in mt HSS strat i have a weird pickup config, which consists of neck trilogy, middle spotlight, bridge warthog (the spotlight and warthog are both swinesheads). if i was goin to change the pickups (which i will do sometime) i would go for crawler and 2 mother's milks, i guess that crawler would have the power for the greenday nirvana kinda stuff but i don't really know too much about it.

lol, what a useful post...

See, I usually play their distorted songs, so I'm looking for a set that can handle almost clean and very distorted sounds. And I agree, most of them do use PAF. Kurt Cobain had 2 Dimarzio Distortion pick-ups of some kind in his Jaguar and that's what I'm attempting to create sound wise because he used it with such different sounds and tones. I also agree with it beign bright.

LOL, well I can't cut in a straight line and I'm a firm believer in letting those who are good at what they do do it to the max!

Yeah, I don't mind having to do any mods, I just want it to look nice, which if I take my time in doing, will pay off. Plus I'm looking at $15-19 U.S. stewart-macdonald pickguards. Nothing too fancy and if I feel I might need another, I'm sure I would have the funds to do so.

So if I wanted it angled, could I just angle the pickup in the way I want it, trace it, then cut it out?

Thanks for all the replies.

Ok, I just looked at the prices and I find them reasonable enough for what they do, make awesome tones and such as I have heard. I'll just have to assert myself into saving more.

The body for the guitar will be Alder for $100 in Strat form. I think it might end up better than my current Schecter Gryphon (C-1 without the bells and whistles of Duncan certified pickups).  :?

^why not try to cut it yourself, and if you $*%! it up, buy a new scratchplate?

sounds the sensible option to me...

as for the pickup? i'd say both the nailbomb and miracle man may be too hot- they're both metal orientated pickups.

You'd want something like a duncan jb/swineshead warthog/dimarzio tone zone kind of output. Maybe a crawler, as big steve said, or an emerald. Even a VH2...

EDIT: glad to see another UG member come to the BK boards! Welcome! No prizes for guessing who I am over there!

Awww I thought I might get at least a peppermint or something.  :(

So yeah, I figured I might get more info off of the BK site than on UG where half of the members are complete and utter newbies.

Yes, I was scheming with different pick-up configurations. Not sure if I want to follow through with all of this, looks a little on the pricey side but I'm sure I get what I pay for, here and anywhere else. I might go humbucker from swineshead (sound clips bear the Condor and Runaway nice choices, maybe Warthog) and 2 singles BK. I'm not sure, either way it seems a bit pricey for a simple-minded one like myself. Hopefully I'll get more work hours next week because I've only been working 3 hour-5 hour shifts guranteed only once a week.

Maybe I need more time on it...

Yes, I quoted myself because I can't find the edit button. Sorry  :oops:

But maybe installments in pickups possibly? Like just me getting one pickup at a time. Possibly humbucker first then the single coils later on. That would be easiest on my savings.
