What would happen if...

Forgive me for the newbie-esqe question, but I'm stricken with curiosity. A while back I was thinking about getting some BKPs for my C-7 Blackjack. I let the GAS subside and went on with life. But let's face it, I'm totally sick of the lack of definition from the stock JB. It's a terrible match for a big mahogany/rosewood guitar like the Blackjack. The consensus for warm sounding 7 strings has always been the Painkiller, but it seems like another popular choice has been the ceramic nailbomb, which I hear is the brightest BKP humbucker (if memory serves). This leads me to my question.

If I were to get a C-Bomb overwound, how would that sound? My rationale is that I've learned to love the pure power that my C-Pig exudes  :shock: , but no sort of 'pig would do well in a warm sounding 7 string. The idea of taking a bright pickup and winding it a little more (but not hugely) in the direction of the C-Pig appealed to me.

So what do you think? Go!

No no no, the c-bomb isnt that bright at all.

The c-pig might be fine in warm 7. Its got plenty of cut in the top end.

How would having a CS overwound sound? I was considering a stock one as well, just curious as to how things would go if a bit more in the muscle-department was added.

It's not top-end I'm worried about. My C-Pig is great in that regard, it's more that the lows might get a bit crowded. I also don't want the mids quite as aggressive.

As I understand it an overwound CS is a C-bomb. I can hear a family resemblence, but they are pretty different pickups; that couple of k must make a lot of difference.

To be fair in a low tuing and dark guitar the CS would be fine.

Yeah, that's what I heard. Seems like CS would be the way to go then. People have said in the past that almost any stock BKP can get you the tone you want, but I wanted to explore my options. I'll talk to Tim about it once I decide on a few other things.

Cold Sweat is definitely what I would recommend for you, based on the descriptions. It's got plenty of output but still stays fairly dynamic. It's a great match for warm sounding guitars, and has pretty neutral mids. Bottom is still full, and you'll get great top end cut.
