What BKP would give me the tone I want?
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:58:53 PM »
Hi! My first post here. :)

So I'm getting a Carvin Dc727 in February, and I thought I'd start figuring out what pickups to go for now. It's a walnut (with maple stripes) neckthrough with mahogany wings, and being neckthrough, the walnut will contribute most (if not all) to the tone. So we can look at it as a walnut guitar. Which means the lows will cut through nicely.

Bridge: I want something that is clear, brutal and tight in the low end. Not too bassy. I tune to drop A and I need the A to be defined.

Neck: I want something that is warm, clear and creamy. Great for fast runs, etc. Think Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetrys lead tone.

My initial thought was a painkiller in the bridge, but I'm open for more suggestions.

Also, alnico or Ceramic?  :D

I forgot to add, the guitar will be played through an ENGL invader-Vader 4x12.

I think a Painkiller in the bridge would be a good choice:p Not too sure though but it sounds like it fits your description:)

And sorry for going offtopic but... I'm planning to buy an invader sometime down the line but i've heared it doesn't quite cut trough in a band situation, do you have any experience with that? And do you think it'd be suited for symphonic power metal type sounds?:p

I do not have the Invader yet, it's ordered and will get here in a couple of weeks just before the Carvin. I'm currently playing through a mesa f30. I have heard nothing but extremely positive reviews about it, many claiming it's the best amp ENGL makes. Of course that is hugely subjective, but the general consensus seems to be that it's awesome.

I'm sure it can handle power metal sounds, as it's very versatile. If you want to hear some of it's tones, check out LiamENGL's channel on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/LiamENGL#p/a/1/7lZFckvAXYI) . He has an Invader 100, and has one of the best tones I've ever heard. He also has a BKP warpig in the caparison horus walnut guitar.

But back to my pickup choice. I've decided to go for a painkiller, but should that be a ceramic or alnico? Any experience from people with a C-painkiller and an a-painkiller?

Also, what neck pickup would be good for the sound I described.

I think the only version of the painkiller is the ceramic version:p And maybe a cold sweat in the neck? (this is mostly a guess based on what i heared other people say about it)

Cold sweat sounds good. Would it give me this tone?

Here is a video to show what I'm after. Per Nilssons solos start at around 2:50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGyaUK4KReE

It's ceramic. He has another channel called LiamENGL where there are lots of videos of him using it as well as a few with a Nailbomb.
