How do I tell what BKP I have?
« on: September 10, 2010, 08:36:40 AM »
First post and a bit of a strange question. I recently picked up Strat that the previous owner had upgraded with some BKP. The previous owner wasn't sure what pickups were in the guitar and to my ears, they sound more of the vintage variety (Sultans or Mothers Milk).

Apart from measuring the resistance value, is there any other way to tell as there doesn't appear to be any markings, however the pole pieces are staggered and bevelled, which narrows down s the option, I think.

Irrespective of the type, the pickups sound fantastic - so much so that I'm thinking of getting another set

I forget, but isn't there a ID on the underside of them? If you get this number and send it to Tim, he can probably track down the original order...

I'm just guessing tho!

Welcome to the forums. :)

Hello & welcome

Unless you have the box or warranty card in the case, there isn't any external way to tell (Roo, none of my BKPs have a serial# stamped on them, although the last few I've bought were fitted by Feline so I didn't look)

You can make an educated guess from the DCR values, however to be certain you need to figure out what magnet type it has - that'll tell you for sure as Apache = A3, Sultans = A2.

If it's A5 then you still might be left guessing as the DCR values of MMlks, Slowhands & ITs all overlap somewhat - but the tone should be a dead giveaway as those 3 models soudn significantly different to each other.

But I have no idea how you tell what type of magnet it it :) perhaps someone else can chime in...
