NMD, Heil PR20
« on: November 10, 2010, 01:38:16 PM »

Just got this today, this mic has been hyped a lot since Jerry Cantrell has been using it live.

I have to say, it's very easy to get a good sound, much easier than with an SM57 - positioning with the Heil is a breeze! I love it when great gear comes under 100€ !

Quick recording with the McRosie, VHIIs, Two tracks guitar, no EQ, no FX, just the Amp and the PR20.

Ha! A new mic day!

Sweeeeeeet

Always fancied Heils, never pulled the trigger for some reason.

But if you keep implying bad things about SM57s, we're gonna have words ;)

Nah, I love my SM57!!!

But I heard this comparison clip from John Ou, googled for best price and ordered one right away. It's got a nice elastic crispness to it, so to speak.

Good man! The SM57 is part of the DNA of rock and metals sounds, and poeple that say bad things about it must be re-educated! But thats not you, so carry on!

Thanks for the clips!

Bloody hell theres a difference there...did he dial it in to make the 57 sound as dull as possible?

Anywho, usefull comparison. Gives a decent idea of the sound of the mic against a known reference.

Have you tried an i5? The difference in top end is similar in nature, but not as extreme, but it has more low mids and low end than a 57.

Apparently he had the mics next to each other, so I suspect that the 57 was more towards the speaker edge - and as you will surely agree, small position changes have a big impact on the 57.

Very true of course.

Ill advise placement for comparison, I think. Surely he realises that speakers are radially symmetrical; the same distance from the centre, same from the speaker and same orientation would be much more sensible than right next to each other. 5mm movement is a BIG difference with any mic, let alone the full diameter of a mic, especially closer to the dust cap.

PR20 is a great mic to have in your cabinet, alongside the 57 and e609.
