HELP!!!!! MM or AM
« on: December 19, 2010, 08:27:09 PM »
im looking into replacing the SSH+ in the bridge of my suhr modern and need advice. its got an alder body and quartersawn maple neck with maple board. i play mostly metal rythym in the style of  at the gates, the absence, dead to fall, darkest hour.....etc. pretty much gothenburg stuff. i tune to C# standard though sometimes drop the low to B. ive been told both pickups will get me there but want a few more opinions as i kow the aftermath is rather new. which is higher output? which has a more focused low end? also im playing through a marshall dsl 50 for the time being till i can save for a soldano avenger.

Be really careful with the Soldano thing man. I had a Soldano Decatone for a little while and that amp kinda sucked. There was not any one thing that it could do particularly well. It was just an all over the place amp with no real purpose, IMO. You could get way better amps like a VHT or ENGL for that sound you want, and the amp will be more versatile.

If you just have to have a Soldano I would suggest trying to find a good modded used SLO. I could have got a really nice mint one for like $2200 before I farked up and bought the Decatone... Search thegearpage, rig-talk, and e-bay.

I understand that the Miracle Man is a particularly good match for a maple neck; even more so if it's a thru-neck.

You just solved your problem with that right there. Yes, I do find the MM to have a similar voice to that of an EMG, but in a good way. It retains all the good qualities of an EMG but none of the bad. It has a more organic sound as well, and not a shrill high end like an EMG 81. Know that the MM is made to mimic Zakk Wylde's tone, and he uses an EMG 81/85. That being said the MM is better than any EMG.

I have a Miracle Man in my Les Paul Custom 68 Reissue and IMO it sounds very different from an EMG, but still does a fantastic Zakk Wylde sound.  The Miracle Man has a much bigger low end, more low mids, and is smoother, more organic and more refined overall.  The EMG is more compressed, saturated, and has this really aggressive high mid voicing to it that the Miracle Man does not have and the EMG is overall much brighter, and more biting.  Some people may find the EMG shrill, but I don't.  I actually really like the voicing of the EMG and wish Bare Knuckle would make a pick up with that same high mid aggression, but even though I like the EMG's voicing, when I compared it to my BK pu's they still completely blew away the EMG's.  I have a Pain Killer in my Dean CFH and was hoping it would have what I liked about the EMG's high mids, but it still was a very different animal.  I have not played the other contemporary BK's, but from what I heard about them I don't think any of them will sound like an EMG.  I have an Aftermath coming soon that will replace my Pain Killer in my Dean and I'll let you know what I think about that when it comes.

Aftermath is the tightest Bare Knuckle and has enough power for metal.

The Miracle Man works (for me, YMMV) a hell of a lot better at lower tunings then E standard... although at E standard it did a good job of taming my old Rectifier. At B standard it's very aggressive and snarling.

Loving Eric's idea: MM into a 5150/6505 will melt faces. Cheap amp option too.  :D

Can't comment on the Aftermath, although it was built to be closer to the EMG81 then the MM and is supposedly tighter.

A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.
