Burny RLG 90 'needs' modding
« on: February 22, 2011, 05:32:46 PM »
I got a great Burny RLG 90 circa 1983   Les Paul clone.  2 piece mahogany back and Flamed maple veneer top.

I'm looking at new tuners (as it doesn't stay in tune well)

RS guitarworks wiring loom

And Pickups

I'm not sure how bright or dark the guitar is, with the original pickups  there is a fair amount of treble on the bridge pickup (I tend to put it around 7 on the tone control)

I was thinking about Rebel Yells as I've heard some tracks with them sounding great, but I know they are very bright which is worrying me a little.

I would want to get anywhere from Classic Rock to Modern Hard rock from the guitar.

I've got the piledrivers in my Tele and they're great. So I'd like to stay with a company I can trust, but  I know people have sung the praises of the WCR American Steele set too.

So Many choices.....

The WCR American Steele set is basically a Godwood bridge and a Crossroads neck. Crossroads is Jim's take on a classic PAF. I had one but sold it. Godwood is a fatter PAF with lots of midrange but not much bass. I still have a set in a swamp ash bodied guitar. They work well for classic rock. They do EVH tones well with that particular guitar. They may lack a little punch for modern hard rock.

The BKP equivalents (which may be slightly hotter in terms of output than the WCRs and therefore better suited for modern hard rock) would probably be the Mule for the neck and a Black Dog for the bridge.

Personally I love my Holydiver bridge and Cold Sweat neck combination. They do cover both classic and modern hard rock very well.

Cheers Stephan

HD/CS-combi would be a good choiche for classic rock to metal. I like the RY's, but could be a little on the bright side, however I think they're a great match for a Les Paul-type guitar.
Depending on your amp Mules do metal too, and everthing else except extreme metal. The BD has a bit more oomphh and mids.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

+1 on both black dog/mule or holy diver/cold sweat advices
depending on how much compression you want

I really think Tim should offer mismatched sets like WCR does and spare us 10 quids  :D :D :D :D
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
