Difference between VHII and Rebel Yell compared to coldsweat.
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:04:27 PM »
Hi guys!
I have a coldsweat set in my mahogany/maple top J custom and i really like them for metal, shred and heavy rock but they are a bit stiff sometimes. So i plan to downtune this guitar and use it for mostly metal and to buy a prs custom 24 tuned to E standard to play everything else.
Pickups i plan to put in the prs are Rebel yell or VHII.
I dont want a metal sounding pickup but it need to be tight enough to do it.

What are the diff between the two(sustain, clarity, punch, warmth, neck, bridge)?
The tone im going for is clear, brigh top, warm low end but tight. Overwound paf vibe.
Looking to get a tone similar to Joe Satriani when he play heavy(summer song, the extremist, one big rush)
with a long sustain and warm lead, and will play various 80's rock, metal like Iron maiden,Randy Rhoads, deep purple,Hendrix, ufo, doken, thin lizzy...not trying to copy those metal tone but want versatile enough to play these.

RY's are great in mahagony, but I like to vocal qualities of the VHII's too. A matter of taste. If you like Steve Stevens tone (listen clips on the forum) the RY's are good stuff. The Black Dog as an alternative have a stronger midrange, but is quite tight in the lowend.

Based on your description what you want, how about them Riff Raffs?

Is the riff raff jucier than the VHII and rebel yell? I dont want another super tight stiff pickup, This need to be versatyle but sound warm and juicy

the riff raff is as bright and sparkly as the cold sweat, but sounds much warmer and more open in the mids, but no near as middy as shown on the website graphic, in my opinion
just a hair middier than the cold sweat

for a fatter midrange, you could go with the black dog instead, which is probably the closest in voicing to the Mo' Joe

i have the vh11 bridge in an lp and it will do ufo, lizzy well but for satriani i don't think it's compressed enough .
it's very paffy , toppy and has almost a single coil quality clean.
i think it gives a lot of detail and is pretty unforgiving, it doesn't even seem 'hot' to me.
naturally your amp will have a big say but to me it has a classic 70's vibe to it, i like it a lot.
sorry i can't make any comparisons. the steve stevens demo( 8) really shows it as it is.

humm the rebel yell with its higher output is probably more compressed and better suited for what i want then.

Yep. the RY's could be a good choice for your guitar. I like Steve Stevens tone and he plays often a Gibson, which is close in concept to your PRS.
